the worst state in the life of a banana is the type when you try to peel it, but the dry green walls kling to the flesh of the fruit, making the walls break. pieces of the wall is forged onto the now moist, exposed eatable part making any ingestion result in a thin dry layer with a foul taste, covering a large portion of the tongue and mouth roof.

That one — known as the Gros Michel — was, by all accounts, bigger, tastier, and hardier than the variety we know and love, which is called the Cavendish. The unavailability of the Gros Michel is easily explained: it is virtually extinct.
