Headphone Amplifiers

Looking for a portable headphone amp to power my 7506s. My discman/ipod just doesn't push them hard enough without distorting.

You're iPod doesn't push 'em hard enough, Dan? I haven't had any issues with my ipod pushing the 7506's. Is it even at normal volume they are distorting or are you really trying to crank up the volume? .

As for an actual Headphone AMP, sorry, I'm not sure on that.

I have an Ipod shuffle... the thing can barely push the ear-bud style phones. Really though, I use my discman (insert Gieco caveman pic) mostly. When you get up to top volumes it sounds like ass. I'm used to hearing them strait from my receiver, which sounds fucking phenomenal. So I want to replicate that sound away from home, on the plane, beach etc.

I wonder if Radioshack or Ultimate Electronics has something for you? Maybe even Guitar Center?

It's not so much an overall volume thing, but a volume quality thing.

Good idea Chris, I'll probably run over there if I don't get any replies.

I've found plenty online, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

I don't have the link but theres this battery powered mini amp. I saw it over a year ago. I believe they took 2x AA batteries. Had a nice analog knob and a red led indicator. It does its job but its facking bulky when you're mobile. Google around

Yeah that sounds like what I've found on Google. Just wondering if anyone has any hands on experience with any particular unit.

I am thinking about getting this sometime. But judging by the sounds of it, some of you have seen this already ... but it appears that its made best for Sennheiser.

And then there is a cheaper model, which works well too, I suppose, for many headphones - this one uses 4 AAA batteries. PLUS, there's an option to plug in another pair of headphones in case your friend wants to listen in:

HeadRoom Total AirHead - $99 + $14.95 for DC/power

Those 280's look pretty beat-up: the earpads are all deformed and the cable looks like it got stretched out too far.

I've been toying with the idea of getting some sort of amp for my mp3 player as I think the sound quality could be better, but the cost seems to be prohibitive especially when it's only satisfying curiosity.

$399 is fucking murder! Even $100 is too much.

There are cheaper options, like this one. for only $30. I want to try one and see if it's worth my money.

There's also this home-made version.
