i'm finally getting out of texas.

i'm subletting a place in Manhattan for 2 months.
I couldn't seem to land something more long term,
everyone wanted to do a pre - meet before hand
and they wanted proof of income and references of which i have none.

so yeah....

anyways, how do you guys go about getting a job.
craiglist, careerbuilder, yahoo jobs...?
or is the old, you know someone who works there that never fails.

i applied at a couple of fashion Magazines; hopefully someone responds.

My Dad's side of the family all live in Shreveport and I have cousins in both Houston and Dallas. I've never been to any edm events there, but am looking forward to it the next time I head down south.

Okay welcome to NY...now here goes...

I work in Human Resources so I am going to be VERY upfront with you....finding a JOB anywhere in the country is hard right now, NY even harder. If you are looking for something in fashion / retail even harder so make sure your job search is larger then that. Right now you need to ask yourself do you want to stay in NY or work in a a particular industry...if you are looking to stay in NY and then eventually get into the industry you are looking for then look at all jobs...like I said right now its very hard to get anything and yes is has turned into a place of who you know and not what you know (sucks). I would go with Monster, Hot Jobs, Career builders, if you are in fashion look at Style Careers as well. Then go straight to the company web-sites and apply that way. If you haven't started looking yet I would get on it TODAY!!! Be prepared that its going to be hard.

To put it into perspective, I recently offered a very qualified man a job for $250,000 (sounds great right...) that was a $200,000 a year pay cut from what he was making 6 months before, but what he had to do to have money coming in cause its so tough out there.

Also not sure where you plan on finally settling but look at queens and brooklyn, they are great to line in and cost a lot less then Manhattan does.

I would try craigslist, and maybe find some job you can work in the meantime [hourly, if you have to] until you find a better position - as other people mentioned, job market is pretty tough right now as most companies are cutting back.

In any case, welcome to NY and enjoy! If you want to organize a pre-meetup count me in, as I am always anxious for reasons to get out of my apartment

yeah, it's though everywhere except here.
there's plenty of work here,
in the energy and medical fields
but i'm not interested in that.

i'm more the creative type, that's why i'm moving to NYC.

i applied for some jobs, late may/early june.
but they wanted to start right away, and of course i couldn't just drop everything and take off so i decided to make the move in July
now that i'm looking, i'm like, where all the cool jobs go....maybe all college students took them during the summer.

right now, a job is a job, a job until somethings better opens up. i'm open to just about anything, that doesn't require me to open up. so if you guys got any leads, feel free to pass them on.

but not of these chains are in NYC

i stopped at a Whole Foods Market today, because i recognize the name
and they didn't have any of the brands i'm used to.

i bought most of my organic fruits and vegies

but what about my god damn Cheerios!!!!

no Peter Pan peanut butter...no borden milk, or minute maid orange juice. Help. I need more of a middle class, kind of place.

I shop at the Chealsea Market. Awesome place to shop and roam around, plus the produce is wayy cheaper than most super markets. Also a celeb sighting place since the food network is there and its in a higher-end neighborhood. (if thats what floats your boat, I could care less about seeing famous people).

In terms of fashion right now, I actually saw on TV that that is a career in NYC that is doing WELL right now. Reasoning be that there are soo many europeans who are thriving in their economy and they are taking over the high-end stores based on their amazing exchange rate. The news report was saying that high-end designer shops (ie: 5th ave, etc) are doing better than they have in years because of tourism. I am sure you will find something if you have the education to back it up, until then, the best job you can have is to wait tables or bartend.....I used to take home a few hundred a night while I was in grad school and lived just fine.
