Dunno Bullshit Music

I am playing at my graduation in early June, however, most people don't like "techno". So, i will probably have to play bullshit music like mainstream rock, pop/alternative, rap.

My question is, is it really possible to mix bullshit music? (hehe my new word ) I am, im sure rap can be mixed, but does anyone have any tips of how to mix this crap?

Since im playing the dance afterwards, im confused why people don't want to hear 'dance' music, instead of bullfuck musak. Has anyone had to play crap, instead of what you usually would like to play?

Hopefully, half an hour or hour of crap, ill try starting into some vocal progressive, and eventually into trance.

Thoughts? Ideas?

hehe, i've been faced with this situation, where I needed to play music I didn't want to, because I was payed to dj.

anyways, what I did was split the night with 30 mins hiphop/rnb, and 30 mins dance/trance etc. and kept rotating with some slow songs in between.

all the hiphop was club stuff, mainstream stuff that people know, mixing old and new tracks, so it was all good. but with the trance, i gave them something they knew, like rapture, as bait, and then started mixing into stuff they didn't know, and before you know it, they started liking it and wanting more!

worked for me at least. gotta go with the flow, can't kill the energy. they usually dig the anthemic big synth stabbing melodies.

thanks for replying quddha.

What do you think i would play for hip hop/rnb , im not too experienced in that area.

Are these alright?:

Ashanti - Foolish
Fat Joe ft Ashanti - Whats Love
Ja Rule ft. Jennifer Lopez - Im Real
Nas - One Mic
Swollen Members - Bring it Home

Any suggestions for rap??? and rnb?

yeah those are perfect.
just look for hiphop/rnb club charts on the web, they'll tell you waht's hot. and its cool to play older stuff too...

like 112 - its over know, dance with me, peaches n' cream, etc.
mystikal - danger, shake that ass
ja rule stuff
and then go even more back with house of pain - jump around, and maybe even vanilla ice! lol.

you know, all that mtv chart stuff. I got a 13 year old sister who helped me pick out whats hot in the hiphop world, and a bunch of friends. ask your mainstream friends what songs they like to hear at a club. go to your local club/pub that plays mainstream, and pick up what they play... altho their mixing can be complete shit most of the time.

as for mixing hiphop, it tends to be different than trance (duh), more quick cuts and fades. maybe have the beats matched up for a few bars, its hard to make it work without clashing the melodies / vocals. but i used to mix that stuff on vtt before i got into trance, so i had a bit of a head start. most importantly have fun. first time I did something like that, I didn't even know what trance was, i thot i was so cool blasting dj jean - the launch with the strobe lights and having everyone go nuts... ahh ignorance is bliss. lol.

Recently i have been mixing R'nB/rap/hip-hop... I was listening to my friend mix them and it sound reallllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy good when the beats are matched..

Try to get remixes or long versions where beats with no vocal are present...

cheers

There's no mixing in hip hop or pop songs. You just slam it most of the time because vocals come in so fast.

I'm sure if you play Darude - Sandstorm and all those cheese trance songs, people will like it.

Ok, I guess you'll have access to cd players so you can burn all the music you want cause if that's not the case I don't think you'll have the time or money to go out and buy enough records for a whole set. So here's some recomendations of hip hop/rnb/rap/garage songs that I like and might do the trick for you:

Mary J. Blidge - Dance For Me (Sunship Main Mix)
Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Through This
DJ Pied Piper & The Masters Of The Ceremony - Do You Really Like It (Sovereign Remix)
DJ Pied Piper & The Masters Of The Ceremony - We Are Here (Sovereign Remix)
House Of Pain - Jump Around
Mark Ryder & MC Vapour - Move Your Body
Eve Featuring Gwen Stefani - Blow Ya Mind
Goosebump Featuring Romina Johnson - Never Gonna Do
Ja Rule - Always On Time (Remix)
Mis-Teeq - B With Me
Old Dirty Bastard Featuring Kellis - Baby I Got Your Money (X-Mix Remix)
Sisqo - Thong Song (Artful Dodger Remix)
Snoop Doggy Dog Featuring Lil' Bow Wow - What's My Name
Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dance Floor
The Underdog Project - Summer Jam
Wideboys Featuring Dennis G - Sambuca
No Doubt - Hey Baby
Architects - body groove

Maybe I missed some but I hope this helps, download them and give them a listen, I think this is what you want.

untrue, if you go to a proper hiphop club, the dj's actually do a good job of mixing songs, laying acapella's over instrumentals, and little tricks and stuff with the mixes.

for mixing hiphop, you beatmatch the high end, not the bass like you're used to
there will be a consistant sanre or high-hat to match, i suggest practiing a bit before you go out and do the real deal

as for checking what's hot and stuff, i know for a fact that most radio stations get thier charts from this site (cause i worked for one)

U gotta play one track for sure:

RUN DMC vs Jason Nevins - It's like that.

it's the greatest track ever, and people like to break dance to it all the time. And surprisingly, I like this track alot too.
