I use ES2 quite a bit, and ES1 from time to time. They sound a bit thin on their own, but if you pass them through a good compression or saturation plugin, they can sound really fat and up-front.

I never use Ultrabeat for drums, but there is quite a few neat tricks you can achieve with it. Check out the newest tutorial from sflogicninja @ YouTube on sidechaining with Ultrabeat. Very creative.

I do use it, as it's the sole sound generator in Logic that lets me use fm synthesis for drums, such as kicks, snares, claps, hats, with the right pitch envelope.

ES2 is not too bad, but has only 3 unprecise envelopes and fm is quite limited in use, plus you cannot set the Pitch to a fixed value for an oscillator.

The secret of electronic drums is a pitch amplitude that goes beyond +-36 semitones, as the sound generator lets you reach those amplitudes, there is theoretically no single limit in terms of sound design.

Unfortunately, presets don't reflect this feature for ultrabeat. All you hear is a bunch of dynamic-less bits while you can make the most powerful dance drums when relying on this kind of synths.

I got to use those fm techniques in ableton live with operator. This is only a few weeks ago that I realised how powerful Ultrabeat could be.

L.

don't use them, probably because i never gave them much attention. i do however love the es-p, es-e, and es-m, awesome shit. i love ultrabeat too, can make really synthetic drums using it, and the kicks it makes are awesome.

I'm looking at getting a mac eventually for my next PC and obviously didn't like the idea of buying a load of software again so I'm happy the kind of sounds you can get from all the various internal synths / fx Logic has, more than enough on their own really apart from the weird creative ones like buffer overrride etc

Well obviously that's a matter of opinion, but IMO the Logic internal instruments are miles ahead of anything coming out of reason. For one thing, you have more than one subtractive synth in Logic (ES1, ES2, etc.). The ES2 is a much more powerful synth than Subtractor. 3 oscs vs. 2, FM synthesis and loads more oscillator types. There really is not much contest there. In addition, there are loads of other synth types like Sculpture and EVO that are simply not available in reason as native instruments. And that is just scratching the surface.

I agree, although I admit that thor features more routing options and sounds really great. Thor replaces a lot of subtractive synths, and features fm/am routing, too. Lovely thing.

Yes, you're right. I quit using Reason at version 3, so I never got a chance to mess with Thor.
