only asking because i see it as a key part of making my tunes.
i learn early on that it's best to start making a track from the bottom.
and thus starting with the bassline and kick is the best way to go.

any thoughts from you guys on this?

i agree. those tracks i start with melody never get finished caus when i then start to work with drums, bass etc im already tired of the melody and toss it. only way for me is to start with groove or some crazy loops/efex.

yeah i think people listen a lot to the bassline.
infact ile go as far as saying they enjoy it more then the main tune/riff it self.
hence more producers making big of beat real basslines.
i think from a producer point off view using tb's and flange makes it
easy to come up with something intreasting.

Yeah i agree with palm - I just loop the melody over and over and get no where with the tune - then i just drop the tune altogether.

if you have a really good melody, start a tune from scratch, but with the key of the melody in mind. then after you have the basis, bring in the melody and tweak your drums/bassline and create some variations of small parts of the melody to use as hooks.

otherwise, start with drums/bassline, move on to hooks, then flesh those out into full melodies.

I think the bass is one of the most important elements of a track. Without the bass (or proper bass) the track basicly sucks. The bassline is a guide during the track, with the wrong type of bassline, you'll get distracted.

I always do kick and bass first. It's just a way of working.

Sounds convincing, but if you always start the same way, wont your tracks start to be very similiar`?

I think making the melody first can be great as well, since youll build everything after that according to the melody, shouldnt that work fine as well??

i do that as well starting from the top. but in the end you are still have to stop and start again with the bassline and build things up so

I always start from a chord progression, usually creating the bassline and choosing the right kick sound, then I try to create the main melody and so on.

sometimes I have a bass sound in mind (specially when I try to make something more Tech) so I start trying to get that sound and then a good kick!


the last thing I use to create is the breakdown and buildup. after that I add all the effect, hits and extra sounds.


sometimes I have nothing in mind so I start playing some chords in the midi controller using a pad sound over a kick trying to find the right progression

when i do this i usualy get a total crash and needs to redo all the drums/groove or melody patch and that way use too much time. thats me tho

Well actually if you start with the melody and lets assume its one of these really great melodys where you listen to them ONCE and you say in your head "thats it"(and not these other melo`s which sound great first, and turn out to be sucky/cheesy)i think you can´t do anything wrong in my opinion. Even if the groove sounds not that strong, and the bass is some how uninteresting, theres still that melody that totally kicks ass and makes you listen to the track anyway.

I think its not HOW to creat the sound that matters, but your creativity. If you are great and can just come up with a sweet melo just like that then your track is gonna be great.
If you are more like mee who starts with simple things,waiting to be inspired, its better to start with the bass and stuff.

Are you using presets or creating from scratch?
