This was an immensely silly night.
Getting downtown was an absolute disaster and several times I was tempted to turn back. I'm glad I didn't, of course, but nevertheless - I don't know what so many people were doing on the 404 at 1 AM, but they weren't doing it very well. Steve's really got some bad luck when it comes to Toronto but fortunately the turnout was good, much better than last.
The set this time was much more like a typical Porterhouse set; the occasional banger with tons of funky and fun party tunes. You could tell that Steve was enjoying himself. I would have been happy to have gone just to hear that set and dance like a madman. As a bonus, though, the crowd was massively entertaining, full of all sorts of hilarious sketch and stories. Ran into some unexpected people too (Gera WTF!?). This is exactly what I hope for with a Steve Porter event, so thank you Steve and thank you Footwork.
P.S. I got in without delay, Jon Jon.
P.P.S. I think it's time for some more poutine.

The Openers
Not going to lie 2008 left a very sour taste in my mouth when it came to Aleksandra and Evan G. The fact that they were opening really disppointed me, however I decided to go in with a fresh slate.
Aleksandra
Kudos to this girl. I had very low expectations but when I walked in I found myself surrounded by a cool deep house sound. Her set was constructed very nicely, very groovy and with some tunes here and there that pulled me onto the dancefloor.
Another great opener at footy - Cant wait to check out a techno set.
Evan G
I had a good laugh at the first track when Evan G came on... looked over at the booth and posed the question 'How many djs does it take to mix a track?' - Aleksandra, Evan G, and Jon Jon all seemed to have their hands all over the mixer.
But pretty much when sour after that.
Second track annoyed me as he brought the bass in and out over and over again...sounded bad. And the melodies seemed drowned the entire set...at one point I assumed the FWs sound was just messed up that night, but I was assured it was just Evan G trying to sound 'dirty' and I would see a massive improvement once Porter took over*. I found that all of his tracks had a really great build up, I would start dancing away and then they would drop off a cliff for a bit into nothingness... You would watch the crowd stop moving all at the same time. At 12:30 I watch the dance floor stop moving 3 times in a track (not because it was epic or anything but because it sucked).
My real problem is his lack of energy. EVAN YOU ARE OPENING FOR PORTER!! Smile and PLEASE look up at the crowd once and awhile. I understand that maybe he is being technical or concentrating but if he would look at the dance floor he would notice that people are not really moving. And the entire set (except for the very end) he looked like a sleeping robot. The odd bob here and there but the same dead expression on his face.
Went outside and when I came back things were finally picking up a bit. He smiled once or twice and was dancing around a bit. (Maybe since Porter was now in the booth).
I understand that an opener shouldn't be dropping bombs but knowing the pace that Porter is going to play I would think a dj could play something that gets the crowd really moving.
*Note - Porter later played a track that Evan G has also play. It was like night and day.
STEVE PORTER
It was a night of crazy non-stop dancing - exactly what I wanted. Having to take a bathroom break was like serving a life long sentance in prision. Lots of funky tracks and some really high energy party tunes. I found the first half of his set was a little lighter, really fun, more upbeat, very funky. The later part of the set got a bit 'darker' (although thats not really the word)... I found myself dancing more heavy/stompy/lower but at a very fast pace. Still very fun with loads of energy.
By 2am I was dancing so hard that breathing seemed impossible. The whole dance floor seemed the same. It was mayhem. Everyone was having the time of their life. Lots of sillyness.
Im looking for two track ids
1) Lyrics 'Take my hand tonight, go ahead tonight' - this song resulted in my going bonkers and a smile that nearly burst my face
2) Blue Monday - New Order... what remix was it?
So great to see so many faces, some expected, and some a surprise. And some people were very missed, but we definately created some extra holes in the dance floor to make up for their absence.
Ps. I know people thought I was crazy for wearing shorts but I have ZERO regret. (Tight jeans and Porter do not mix)
I can not wait for Porter to return.
Anas Attia
Meh. I think I was too tired to really give him a chance but I wasnt really digging want I heard. Left after a track or two. But kudos... I would hate to follow porter.
Porter should have played another extended set... No one should have to follow a set like that
