Condoms wanted: experienced rubbers preferred! (Windsor)
Calling all Windsor men: The university needs your used rubbers.
University of Windsor in Ontario is looking for 100 of the city's men to amass their used condoms for three months and drop them off at campus labs - for $50.
The curious project is testing "failure rates." Nursing professors are looking for microscopic holes in condoms exposed to "bedroom pressures." They also need unused domes - say, ones that have been carried around in a wallet for three months.
"We tend to assume that the failure rate is human error, [that] we store them incorrectly, damage them with fingernails or jewellery, or that we don't put them on properly," says Eleanor Maticka-Tyndale, a sociology professor and Canada Research Chair in social justice and sexual health who is involved in the study. "But we don't really know how much is human error and how much might be something that could be improved in the manufacturing."
Participants must be over 18 and have experience handling the contraceptives, as well as prospective partners: Over three months, each man must return 10 used and 10 unused condoms in a plastic bottle that's then sealed in a baggie.
Then it's off to the campus labs, where the condoms will be filled with a benign virus that's larger than HIV. They will then be suspended in a beaker filled with neutral solution and jiggled on an agitator. Finally, the solution will be tested to see if any of the virus has seeped out.
"[Condoms are] far better than not using condoms. But they're not 100 per cent," Dr. Maticka-Tyndale said.
And that's where the good men of Windsor come in.
