You know, him and Perry Ferrell had huge crowds for their sets. Of course, popular doesn't mean good.

last year while watching roger waters perform in surround sound a plane flew overhead with its entire wingspan in LED lights. It scrolled "STEVE AOKI PLAYING IN L.A. TOMORROW NIGHT!"

my perfect moment of pink floyd heaven was ruined.

hes not playing soulful, meaningful, deep music. what he is doing is simply rocking out. he is entertaining his crowd. I bet a majority of that crowd went home to tell their friends "Steve Aoki owneddd." And based on his performance he is building a following by using physical movements alongside the music to entertain his audience. you could practically say he is unique. he is adding a dynamic to a set that doesn't really exist in many DJ sets. Which makes him unique in a way and makes the old school EDM listener open their mouth like those politicians that say "my my my, such behavior will not be tolerated!" I think its funny and entertaining all around, both his behavior and the response he gets from people who don't get what he is doing, or why a crowd who goes out to be entertained might like his antics.

A DJ can do whatever the fuck they want on stage but if they play shit music I'm going to call a spade a spade...

Fair enough, he does play shit music to you and myself. To his crowds he probably plays as good as music as any DJ that we think plays good music. A DJ's purpose is also to entertain though, and if he can do that through his physical actions, it's just an extra dynamic towards his performance. I'd be bored if I went to a show and all I got was some good music to be honest. I want to see the DJ's personality as much as I want to hear the music, I think they go hand in hand.
