Looking to buy Monitors

Hey all, I'm in the market for picking up a pair of monitors for djing purposes in my room, as well as potentially being used for small dorm parties. I've heard good things about the KRK Rokits, but am wondering which model (5,6 or 8) offers the best value for my needs. I'd of course love to have more power, but I'm not sure if the added price necessarily warrants the increase in wattage. Any suggests/advice would be appreciated.

I have the krk rokit 5's and a 10s subwoofer. I can't imagine needing anything bigger. I just got them and they go crazy loud and the sub shakes my room. I don't know what your dorm is like but that setup should be fine.

I use the Mackie HR 824's for monitors while mixing and for producing. There kinda pricey but worth it. If you're not going to be going down the producing road, then really anything will suffice. I would probably look into some small, powered PA's, as studio monitors are very flat, and you may not like the sound because of this.

if you are planning to use them for small parties...i'd probably just go with some PA speakers...maybe a 10" speaker.

jbl eons, mackie srm series, etc...

I have Behringer Truth B2031a's. Unlike the rest of the Behringer line, their speakers are great quality.

agreed, if your not producing and you'd rather have more power at your end for parties. look for some small powered PA or some small passive speaks with a decently priced amp.

I have rockit 5's for my production but they lack when you really want to jam out on turntables. So for that I have a pair of Peavey SP2G's and a yamaha 2x 500W combo mixer. I'm not saying to get anything that big, but when your just dj'ing for jam purposes PA's are definately the way to go. I had the SP2G's in my college dorm/houses every year. Damn good times.

Alright, thanks for the advice. One of the reasons why I was taken by the Rokits was their great reviews and low price, but I'll look around for some active PA's instead. Additionally, I'd be regularly hooking these speakers up to my laptop, but I suppose I should steer clear of Pc speakers?

If you do go PC speaker, go with the Logitech Z-2300s. I've had mine for years before I got my monitors and while there's no comparison in clarity, they'll get loud enough for a small party easily.

Thanks, I'll look into those. How are the B2031a's for parties/casual listening? Any other suggestions for speakers under $3-400?

Yamaha Stagepas 300 is an excellent choice. I'm actually buying the Stagepas 500 PA's which sound great and have more bottom end than the srm 350's. Plus u get a mixer board with limiters/compression and 8-10 inputs (8 on the 300, 10 on the 500) It's around $500 for the 300 and $900 for the 500 (set of 2) Try them out yourself at a Guitar Center or whatever. You will be impressed.
