Where does the HD280 stand? Is it flat frequency response or no? Seems like it isn't but people give them decent reviews on google. Any other recs for cans?

those akg k 240 mk ii's look pretty good! industry standards are always apetizing.

still curious to know if those senn' hd280's are truly meant for production monitoring? sleeve notes say they have a "warm" reproduction.

The HD280 Pros are terrible for monitoring your mixes. They're a closed back design, so they're great for tracking (recording) due to the minimal spill/bleed into the microphone, but are very bad for mixing. For production work, you'll want something with an open or semi-open back design to get a more accurate sense of your mix, particularly in the lower frequencies. As suggested, use the search function - there are several threads discussing headphone recommendations.

I'm def getting a pair of these but do you need a separate headphone amp to drive them? I have an Echo Audiofire but the manual doesn't say the output in ohms.

If you are getting 701s, you would want a separate amp regardless. Inbuilt headphone amps are never great quality and 701s would be worth the investment.
