I know this is a totally generic answer, but I'd say it varies greatly. I've been playing piano since I was 7 but I'm probably not quite that good. If you could sit there and play harmonic pieces for an hour and then go back and listen I bet you'd find some amazing melodies.

hoooly shit I'm going to need this guy to write out some sheets for that stuff. I saw Flaming June, then children and Saltwater and Out of The Blue and I think I almost died.

This is Torley Wong, he's an INCREDIBLE piano player. He has autism/aspergers, I don't know how much that contributes to his playing, nor do I know how long he's been playing. Though I do know that all he did to play that arrangement was spend maybe a few minutes learning each melody, virtually all of the transitions and the harmonic stuff was improvised.

Another amazing thing was how spot-on he was... everything seemed so improvised, and yet so precise.
