soundcard+monitors are the most important gear in a studio, so u gotta sort this shit out. internal soundcards are muddy, noisy, lacking dynamics and everything else. cant help you on Vista though, id throw Vista in the bin and get Win7 instead.

Ok that makes sense... seems like I might go the way of the E-mu 0404... but that said I'm a little confused about some of the competition out there like:
M-Audio FastTrack
Tascam US Series
Lexicom Lambda/Omega/Onix
These are all advertised as recording interfaces and it seems like they are only for taking mic recordings in...
Are they also ok for just straight DAW work? Can I monitor out from Cubase and trust what I'm hearing when mixing?

I downloaded a 64-bit Windows Vista driver from ESI for my Maya44 USB which installs fine and shows up in Cubase 5 under the Device drop-down menu.
Selected however, Cubase comes up with an error message stating that the USB device appears to be unconnected.
Then I realized I had a Tascam US-122 lying around which is now working for me with 64-bit drivers...
That said I'm thinking about selling both and buying an 0404... or checking out competition from Lexicon and M-Audio.

it appears the 0404usb has removed the dsp effects and is an improved quality over the internal pci 0404... continuing to check out other interfaces but so far still leaning towards 0404

ClearWater, you do not have to buy a new sound card, unless you want to. are you using the latest vista driver? i know it might seem stupid to ask, but some people just install the drivers off the cd. what sound cards come up in Cubase 5? just the software ASIO driver (assuming Cubase 5 still has that)? |
i thought windows 7 could use XP drivers?
