You're all going to call me stupid and laugh, but whatever: I don't claim to be a technical person at all - I know shit about electronics.

I want to record my vinyl to my computer. The turntable that I have makes it super easy to record your vinyl directly to a SD Card (what the fuck?) or a USB drive (double what the fuck) but it's in 128kbps. Why the hell would I want to go from the amazing vinyl sound to something worse than youtube, I'm not sure. So this means I've got to go around the damn manufactures doing this. Being a turntable, it's got those handy white and red line out thingies in the back. Now, I'm guessing an external soundcard will allow me to plug a cable from the white and red line outs into the soundcard and then into my computer to record it?

Am I correct at all? If not, how the hell can I record my precious vinyls cheaply? If I'm correct, what's a good, cheap soundcard?

Hell, this entire post could really just be: how can I record my vinyls in good quality to my computer? Yeah, I'm tired as hell, please someone help me.

You need a sound card with a good amp for the turntables. You could just out put the turntable into your computer but the volume/sound may not be that good. What turntable are you using? you might be able to change the bitrate settings on it.

I should think it'd be possible to change the bitrate...that would be a total waste of functionality if not.

I came home from Thanksgiving and my Technics is broken =/ This is the one that I have with me at college. It's small and so I'm able to fit it in my dorm. Not going to get a new Technics until next summer, so looking for a way to make this work in the mean time.

Well, I suppose if it only records at 128kbps to an USB stick (which is really fucking stupid) you could wire it to your computer line in from the headphone jack (unless it has proper line outs). No guarantees on the sound quality but it could work.

Surprisingly it actually has proper line outs.

It's a fucking weird turntable, I'll tell you that much.

I'm guessing I'll just have to buy a sound card and go from the turntable to the sound card to the computer?

Any advice on a cheap sound card? (I'm assuming a sound card is what will do the job for this, if not please tell me now lol)

I don't think I've seen a computer within the last decade that didn't come with a sound card already installed. Check all the inputs of your computer to see if there's a line in anywhere.

Or are you on a laptop?

Oh I fucking know. It's just... yeah. I know haha.

It works though. It's great for just listening to records in my dorm room. Doesn't take up much space at all. Gets the job done. Except in recording my shit!
