PreSonus Studio One

Anybody here using this? I didn't think that I was in the market for a new DAW, but I downloaded the demo a while ago on a whim just to see how it compared to other DAWs and I was pretty blown away at how intuitive it is and how efficient its workflow is. Drag/drop for just about everything, keystrokes for every command, clean interface, a very cool Control Link feature for setting up MIDI controllers, stable, very cool Console view, blah, blah, blah,... Best of all, it's got all the power features that you need, but with very little bloat (and I hope it stays that way).

The new 1.5 update will be out soon and will add some fixes and a bunch of nice new features. I'd like to see a few more improvements (better handling of hardware synths, more flexible bus routing, track folders), but none of these are dealbreakers IMO and, like I mentioned, I like the fact that it's not as bloated as Sonar, Cubase, etc. It's lean, but powerful and stable - I threw every CPU hog in my VST folder at it at once and it never even hiccupped. It's made me decide to sell my little-used Cubase 5 license since a dude on KVR sold me his license for dirt cheap, and it's already getting as much use as Sonar is!

If you're in the market for a new DAW, I highly recommend checking it out.

I heard some good things about it as well but not used it yet.

Dave, quick question: do you ro have you used Logic? it would seem like the logical (sorry) choice for what you do? )apart from you're a PC user obviously.

Not to hijack this thread, I just mention it becuase I used sonar years ago then found logic (back at version 5) and logic seemed so much more intuiitve to me apart from the environment (which now isn't an issue).

No, I've actually never used Logic.

My wife can confirm that.

I've seen countless videos though and Logic does look like a great DAW.

It's a shame you can't really give it a shake without ponying up for a mac. It just seems like it would fit you very well......

I tried it a while ago. I liked the feel and the look of it, but I never got too deep into it. If I keep disliking Ableton I may try switching over.

It sends MIDI CCs out just fine, but it's more a matter of its limitations for supporting hardware. For example, S1 doesn't send SYSEX, RPN, or NRPN, so, depending on the synth, it can be difficult or impossible access/automate some parameters. And it doesn't have anything equivalent to Cakewalk's instrument definitions (.ins) or Steinberg's device maps for calling up your hardware synths' patches/parameters. Hopefully, PreSonus will improve in this area in the near future.

It's funny you mention getting "deep" into it, because S1 actually doesn't really feel "deep" to me - it actually feels more like it has a lot of surface area, if that makes sense. Almost everything is right there, or just a click/drag/drop away.
