Pete Tong on the music industry, superstar DJs and Beatport
A lot of people on TA say we have no idea how the music industry works and much of the discussion here about DJs, web labels and people like Deadmau5 is just speculation by "armchair ravers". So here's an interesting interview with Pete Tong, part of the Guardian's big feature on the changing face of dance music and DJs. Tong's not exactly a brilliant DJ but he's been in the industry since 1983, running one of the biggest ever dance music labels and becoming a hugely successful DJ.
He talks about the original superstar DJs, Sasha and Paul Oakenfold, the "death of dance music" and its subsequent rebirth, the rise of Beatport and Deadmau5 and the radical changes in how the industry works. It's also a video interview:

Also included in the feature are interviews with Deadmau5, the Swedish House Mafia and Marshall Jefferson, as well as a lot of guff written and spoken by Paul Morley:
