Did you get your HST rebate?

Sigh. I didnt see this coming at all. First, the government passed the new tax without proper consultation with the public. Now they are sending around the bribes to make people shup up and accept it.

I got $100 cheque in the mail. ONLY $100???? I refuse to cash it, I will call on Monday and tell them to shove it up their ass.

I will probably pay more in one month in the increased tax levies than the $100 to offset it for the year. It is a joke, it is an insult. Yes, maybe I have some pride, a sense of dignity, but they cant buy me off or shut me up. I want them to know that I DID NOT ACCEPT this tax.

So its not free money, folks. It ts money that the government gave to shut you up, to BUY your permission to accept this HST tax.

Enough with giving big business tax breaks and rebates and shit while shifting the tax weight/burden on us the taxpayers. While they're enjoying their $1.2 billion G8/G20 party and talking about freezing public service workers wages to deal with the deficit while maintaining irresponsible spending practises.

People need to be heard. People need to understand what this is all about. Alleged HST tax benefits are mostly a theory. How do they know if they will create jobs, and not be used to pay CEO's even more bonuses?

BTW this whole nonsense about businesses passing on their savings to you.

The premiers own LCBO has rejigged its prices to make sure that they dont go down on July 1st meaning that they are going to make even more off you starting July 1st.

So if the province's own monopoly business wont adjust their prices downward, why would anyone else?

What a scam

I am proud to say i voted both times and both times i didnt not vote for mcidiot.

I got my $100.00. What a joke.

Speaking of married people getting $320, is it true that if you file as common law you don't even get a GST check? just thinking into the (near) future. Seems like common laws get screwed the most.

common law would get something, im assuming its the $100. I think GST depends on your income.

who said it's "free money"??? and it's three payments, btw.

http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/credit/sttb/index.html

I think the entire rebate system is ridiculous. isn't that far more inefficient and costly to administer than simply incorporating a rebate claim in the tax return for eligible persons???

in any case, whether you agree or disagree with the HST rebates (and the GST ones for that matter), not cashing the cheque is pointless, IMHO.

if you don't want the money, cash the cheque and donate the money to your favourite charity who will put it to good use. you will get a small tax credit for yourself for your donation.

hell, if you're that upset about it, donate the money to an opposing provincial or federal party and email your MPP and MP to say so.

not cashing it is dumb...

Brilliant point, yes. Kinda makes you think why they're doing it - more of public image thing, that people are getting money out of it, false logic for accepting the HST tax. Yay, go HST go, it gave me some cash to spend for the weekend/party/whatever.

That money means little to me, I am not desperate for the cheque. Its an issue of dignity, morals, principles, real issues at hand, and noone can EVER bribe me, in any case or any situation. Charity/donation sounds like a great idea tough. We'll see, we'll see ... I am leaning more towards making a public statement and ditching the rebate. That way I can sleep better at night, haha ... I would feel guilty if I accepted that filthy money.

common law is treated the same as married, so they're not getting 'screwed'.

qualifying for both the GST and HST rebates depend on your income. for HST, if you earn over 80k, or couples earn over 160k, the rebate does not apply.

come on guys...read up on the topic. you're not stupid people and you can look this up very easily online or make a phone call to the relevant tax office or CRA if you're still not sure.

do it...donate it.

the $100 ($300 when all is said and done) may indeed mean very little to you, but if a lot of people donate that money to a good cause, it will mean a LOT to people who DO need it

by all means make your thoughts known to your MP and MPP. public outrage DOES have an impact.

look how quickly the provincial Liberals ditched the sex-ed initiatives earlier this year (and though I do support better sex-ed for kids, that program was way too much, way too soon).

My $100 has been cashed and the donation has been made to the Ontario Conservative Party. Time to get this fuck head out of power.
