Also that picture is pretty old and I learned about the Mariana Trench in High School, but it's still pretty crazy to think about.

Crazy how little we know about the deep. More money should be invested into deep ocean research - I heard in a lecture (think it was on TED.com) that the amount NASA spends in one year would fund all aspects of ocean research for 50 years.
Blue Whales have a maximum dive depth of approx. 600ft though...

Absolutely. The episode on the BBC Series Blue Planet has an awesome special on deep sea creatures. I'm sure none of us could even dream up some of the insanely complex and strange animals that live that deep.
