that's something I have been speaking a lot with a dj friend of mine. Vocals are owning trance song because of two reasons.
1. Techno is getting more and more commercialized on radio station.
2. Reason #2 comes directly from number and link to your idea, now ppl can sing and put a title on the song they listen too...
That could explain a lot of things... but still, I prefer my instrumental songs =)

crossover appeal it's that simple. vocals = crossover which = ppl who have $ which.... u get the picture.

Sure... What I meant by that is if you wanted to have a killer track back in the days (without vocal most of the time) you had to put your energies in the search of your very sound and melody. Making your track an excellent track was all about music and harmonics...
I just think that now, they over-consider the place of the singer in the song meaning, they will throw in a very flat boring bass line and put all the emphasis on the singer... Isn't it a downward spiral toward a boring, repetitive and *all sounding the same* kind of music?
