there are a few things, depending on what's going on with your back. So one thing is to have a computer chair that supports you where you need support - this is very much based on your body and how it works.
But at the same time, you need to take a look at your posture while you are sitting, or a new chair isn't going to do shit. Like leaning back? not such a good thing if your back is starting to shit on you.
I work in software and have basic been wrestling backpain for a long time now. Via physical therapists, new chairs, and all that. Honestly, sitting on a keyboard bench is a great thing, but if your muscles are already too weak to support you doing that for a prolongued period of time its not going to work out very well. Here are some general bullet points for dealing with computer work and backpain:
* The right chair will help, but its got to be adjustable to you. These chairs can be god damn expensive and it can be difficult to find the right one. I only have a good one because i cycled through 5 chairs at work and then bought that one at home.
* Get up and walk around at least once an hour for like 5 minutes. The body is good at moving, not staying still.
* Stretch and exercise daily. A lot of backpain I experience anyway has to do with muscles being too tight and other muscles being too weak. My biggest issues are things like my chest and abs being too tight (this happens when you sit, esp if you hunch over).
* Consider what you can do to ergo your work environment *and* workflow. For example, are you looking up or down or at the corners of your monitor a lot? All of these movements, even if small, add up and you end up with a repetitive stress injury (software engineers get this *all* the time). Adjust your monitor so that you are looking around the center without effort. Consider moving whatever little plugins you are working on to the center of your screen while you are working on them. Stuff like that.
* Get inventive with how you work. Take a synth and put it on a high counter top so you can stand while you mess with it. Then take a break from producing to work on your sound design a bit. Go for a walk when you want to study your musical inspiration.
The fact that you are experiencing pain means something's not working. And I will tell you now, it only gets worse and its tough as hell to reverse. Take it seriously and change your lifestyle and working habits now.
