Your DAW's Reliability Rating

Name your DAW, including version number, and give it a reliability rating out of 10. Then vent your rage or praise in this thread.

Me first...

Sonar X1c Producer: My CPU is a Q6600 at stock speed with 4GB RAM, Asus P5Q Pro mobo, and Asus EAH4670 VGA. Running on Windows 7 64-bit.

DAW Reliability: 4/10.

WHEN I FIRST PLAYED around with Sonar X1, I was only using Garittan Pocket Orchestra and TruePianos Amber, and it never crashed. I could leave the sequencer on loop mode all night and wake up and it was still playing. So initially I was quite impressed.

However, when I started using more VSTs for a trance track, that's when Sonar started misbehaving. I'm using mainly VSTs included wth the Producer package, however I did update Rapture and Z3ta to the latest and full versions.

There was a time when Sonar would crash constantly whenever I hit the sequencer play button. I later found out from the Sonar forums, that it was because I was using a guitar patch in Dimension Pro - some random unipolar MIDI setting would cause Sonar to crash. Setting the parameter value to "0" solved that problem.

Now I am able to work on a track, but sometimes the audio engine just goes silent, after I save a project, or just after a period of inactivity. I am using a Roland Octa-Capture so it should be totally compatible with Sonar.

I have to quit (sometimes force-quit) Sonar and launch it again to get sound back. Occasionally I can just go to the preferences and change the audio buffer setting and I will get the sound back.

Editing MIDI notes is sometimes a pain. Just switching tools from the toolbar can sometimes take 10 seconds, and dragging groups of MIDI events can also be painfully slow. I even hide all the tracks except the one I am working on and it only improves performace a lil bit.

The CPU meter doesn't indicate that my machine is being stressed at all.

I am stuck with this DAW as you can't sell or transfer it as per their licence agreement, so I will just have to be patient, I guess, for them to fix the bugs.

So, this is really a Sonar X1 complaint thread, right?

I currently own and use three DAWs and none of them give me any serious issues, so here are my stability ratings:

Sonar X1: 9/10
Pro Tools 9: 8/10
PreSonus Studio One v2: 9/10

I marked PT down because of the workarounds that I have to use (i.e., VEP as a subhost) to use all of my RAM (it's still not a 64-bit application) and the associated occasional freezes that I experience using the subhost. I've used Sonar since v5 and it's been consistently stable on the numeruous systems that I've owned over the years. Studio One has always been very stable for me, but it gets less use than the others.

Currently using W7 64-bit, a Gigabyte mobo, Q6600, and 8GB RAM.

Fruity 10 (I'ma fruity n00b lol) Rating: 6.5

It does what I want it to do and that's all that I can really ask of any tool. However, it's very hard to use "on the fly". Editing patterns on the fly is, well, a hindrance. But yea, I can write music on it and that's all that really matters. I'd like to upgrade in the future though.

I have 5-6 year old core 2 duo processor that i run 32-bit xp with fl studio on, updated to latest version as of late summer 2011. i had a project last winter that would suddenly freeze all sound at wherever the song marker was. started affecting other projects after a while, so im guessing it was malware/virus/poorly cracked software cough that was the main culprit.

other than that ive had maybe 15 times fl studio has crashed on me, since they went from fruity loops to fl studio, so i gotta say im more than happy with it's reliability, considering i only have 1 gig of ram lol. 9.9/10 from me.

1.7 GHz with 1.00 RAM duo core processor running FL 9 (I have FL10 but I like my patterns) with Windows Vista

When I do projects that require lots of VSTs that use CPU it gets really tedious even when I do bounce to audio. It doesn't crash much but it's really hard to work on music when the computer can't handle that much processing.

If I had to rate it 4/10 just because my laptop can't handle it much.

A $700 self built PC based on an Intel Q9400. Dual boot XP-32 and W7-64

DAW is an ancient Cubase Studio 4

Reliability is pretty much 10/10

It crashed or freezes maybe once a week, but always recovers the project I was working on and doesn't repeat the crash at any given stage. The only thing that regularly crashed on my system is a copy of Live Lite that came with my interface, although I'm guessing Live users are used to crashes.

In that case, WOuldn't that 4/10 rating be given to your laptop instead of FL Studio?

PC

Intel CPU Core i7-2600 8gig ram WIN 7 duel boot with Win XP
Ableton 8.1.3

Crashed at least 2-3 times a day. Really didnt like running Predator or the Virus TI. Although tech support is really good with Ableton, just didnt find it very stable.

6/10

Mac Book Pro

2.2 i7 8GB
Logic 9.1.5
Ableton 8.1.4

Logic runs like a dream, only crashes sometimes if you try insert a new audio or midi channel while Predator is playing. But thats my only issue.
9/10

Only used Ableton a few time on Mac, since I prefer Logic.
Seems to run ok but haven't really done anything with it.

I guess, I wasn't really going to put a rating but everyone else did. FL Studio for me gets a 8/10.
