hey guys,

ive recently discovered that pitch shifting certain drum/percussion elements can really help things sit well in the mix. I use Battery for my drums and the pitch shift knob does change the pitch but it also shortens the length of the sample (when pitching up). I dont want to change the length of the sample just the pitch. Being able to do this in real time is important too so I can really hear the impact the changes make while the song is playing. What methods and software are people using these days?

In Battery 3, select the pad with the sample that you want to re-pitch. Select the "Cell" tab and change the pitch using the Tune knob (top-center of the Cell window). Doing this will change the length, but you can adjust for that by selecting the "Stretch" tab in the lower lefthand corner of the Cell tab and changing the Speed parameter. Use the Smooth and Grain controls to clean up the stretching as necessary.

If you use Ableton, you can just transpose w/ sampler.

I don't pitch shift my drums. Should I?

lowering or raising a few cents can fatten or tighten a sound. also using an envelope can add transient quality and change a sound altogether. Should you ? If you have to ask, then i guess no.

No problem. It's certainly not obvious from the way it's implemented. Seems like NI should have put the stretching parameters closer to the Tune knob. I actually had to open Battery 3 and look for it to remind myself where the stretch parameters were.

The Frequency Shifter in Ableton 8 is quite good.

I've played around with it in the past, I don't think it's too commonly done, though. What with samples as processed as they are these days.

Pitch shifting a kick into a note that's in the key a track is in is useful, especially if the kick and root note are only a tone or semitone apart, but it's not essential most other times imo. Envelope shaping can still be useful, especially as it's what all the Anjuna kiddies are doing these days.

I often tune percussion for a track as well, even if it's just to a root and fifth note. Especially if the perc is particularly tonal.

yeah, I definately want to experiment with pitching "toned" percussive elements but for now I really want to tweek my open hats and claps to fit in the mix better.
