France invades Mali?

So what's the story on this? According to our mainstream media, it's because they are trying to root out Islamist terrorists in Mali. But I still have to wonder, what makes that their business anyway? Or are they trying to steal a page from the American war machine? We all know how well that's been working for us this past decade.

i would suspect (but have no idea) that the region is a former french colony of some sort?

and "invade"? arent they just doing air strikes? and asking the african union to deal with everything else?

Well according to this article, they are planning a ground assault.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...tm_hp_ref=world

quote:
After a punishing bombing campaign failed to halt the advance of al-Qaida-linked fighters, France pledged Tuesday to send hundreds more troops into Mali as it prepared for a land assault to dislodge the militants occupying the northern half of the country.

The move reversed France's earlier insistence on providing only aerial and logistical support for a military intervention led by African ground troops.

France plunged headfirst into the conflict in its former colony last week, bombarding the insurgents' desert stronghold in an effort to shatter the Islamist domination of a region many fear could become a launching pad for terrorist attacks on the West and a base for coordination with al-Qaida in Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan.

But despite five days of airstrikes, the rebels have extended their reach, taking over a strategically important military camp in the central Malian town of Diabaly on Monday.

On Tuesday, France announced it was tripling the number of soldiers in Mali from 800 to 2,500. The offensive was to have been led by thousands of African troops pledged by Mali's neighbors, but they have yet to arrive, making it increasingly apparent that France will be leading the attack and not playing a supporting role.

And it does appear it was one of their former colonies. Hmmm...

It's a french colony and the Mailian gov asked for assistance.

It's an incredibly poor country that was beginning to be outgunned by Islamist rebels in the north, who were trying to destabilize the government.

France are, by the looks of it, doing the right thing here.

Only a matter of time until they surrender then collaborate though.

Right ok, I wasn’t aware things had escalated.

Best of luck frenchies, go bomb those darkie theists

But seriously, if there is a real prospect for the region to become the Afghanistan of Africa, and provide a “launching pad”, then why shouldn’t the French try and stop them?

Because the world works much better when every country is as isolated as possible and respects each others sovereignty to allow Islamofascism to run rampant through the third world. I mean that was the takeaway from the last decade in US foreign relations, right? That some people did something really shitty and the US did something really stupid in return, so everyone should just let actually evil people do whatever they want from now on?

I'm all for France going off on their crusades, so long as I don't have to fund it.

I figured I'd be in the minority when it came to this new invasion. But then again I'm not fully opposed to it, I'm just indifferent to it. If the French honestly think they can win this one quickly before public relations start to turn against them, then I'm for it, good on them. I just hope it doesn't turn into their version of Iraq or Afghanistan.

In this case there's not much to complain about though, but France doesn't have the greatest reputation when it comes to handling former colonies.
