i use addictive drums for acoustic kicks, snares, hats, cymbals, etc. i layer it with synthetic kick/snares, i'll typically use all acoustic hats/cymbals. so make your full loop in addictive drums then in addition to that loop, i will also sequence a loop of hats/rides in addictive drums, bounce it out and tinker with the audio (detune a few hits and lower the volume to simulate velocity change), then hi-pass that hat/ride loop. you want this hi-passed layer to sound somewhat "blurry" so it just adds some extra busyness, you can sidechain that hi-passed loop depending on what you're going for.
it's amazing what results you can achieve with that formula, no need for funk breaks.
