defeats the whole purpose of hardware for me! but i can see how they are useful

Well its good for better stereo imaging when your synths are on the other side of your studio, you don't need headphones or move your computer chair across making adjustments.

I think software editors are useful for a number of reasons :-

1) Accessing hidden features on less knobby synths. It's much easier to use a computer than it is to delve into most synth UI's.

2) Librarian. Storing more presets than the hardware can store itself.

3) Automation. You can't do this with all editors, but it's a boon when you can.

4) Adding to the speed of programming on synths that are a pain to otherwise program. The Alpha Juno editor on the iPad being a prime example.

yep agree with most of that, 3 - i actually stopped doing automation on hardware synths, i think it gives a more natural feel to things
4 - i dont buy synths that are a hassle to program any more

God, the System-1's editor looks so awful, i guess i'm going to use that as my main keyboard then and put the bass station 2 some where else.

you could always send the BS2 synth to me heheehe i so need to get a a sytnh so i can make sounds with out looking at my screen!

I have the jp80x0 editor by mystery islands and being able to automate is a huge bonus plus I can load my patch bank files much easily than having to transfer via sysex. I can't wqit for the new version that has a patch library manager similar to the one in virus ti's total control.

I also have a virus ti and I use the hardware to experimenting by twiddling knobs (much faster than mouse clicking and with hardware u can twiddle multiple knobs at once) plus the keyboard of course. but when I know what kinda sound I wanna make then I might use the vst to click away until I get the sound I want.

it's the best of both worlds imo
