September 2015 Promo [techno, vinyl]

It's been a cool two years since my last mix, which, like all my other mixes, was done on traktor. Around that time I also got my second deck and mixer and basically decided I was done with traktor. Inititally I thought I'd post a mix done on vinyl maybe six months later, but I had to learn manual mixing from scratch, which turned out to be so much harder than expected

I'm decently confident in my abilities in beatmatching now, at least at home. My phrasing used to be absolute dogshit, I think it's better now although there's still some mistakes here, although I hope I haven't done anything too embarassing. I think my levels are still a bit shit, would be grateful to get some technical feedback from you guys.

Musically, i'm trying to sell myself as a DJ here so it's mostly stuff thats going to work on the floor. Still, it starts out dubby and mellow and the first 30 minutes are quite detroit-y and melodic. It gets a bit harder and 90s towards the end, where im trying to show off my peaktime mode. Of course I snuck in some trance-y tracks towards the end, I hope you'll enjoy those

Here's the tracklist, I tried to not play the super obvious stuff that everyone is playing and also tried to include a bunch of nice 90s records.

01 Buffered Multiple - Buffer [Lirum Larum]
02 Jon Hester - Liquid Reflections [LAG]
03 BEF - Inertia Force [Argumento]
04 ZIPPO - Orbit [Enemy]

06 Deniro - Penal Colony [Tape Records]
07 Cherry Bomb - Undercover [Music Man]
08 H & M - The Wings [Axis]
09 Daribow - Immortal Soul [Dystopian]
10 Aiken - Unexploited [Non Series]
11 Yaleesa Hall - Second Leyland [Will&Ink]
12 SPX - Lingering Resentment [Time To Express]
13 Bizz OD - Jack [Force Inc]
14 A & S - Reprise 03 [A&S]
15 Anorak - ABsense 004 [ABsense]
16 Mental Resonance - Reference 06 [Reference]
17 Clint Foster - Throughway [Synewave]
18 Tadeo - Deep Space [Token]
19 Overall Severity - Backfiring Nerves [Key Vinyl]
20 Shift Control - Moving Forward [Design Music]

Some familiar suspects, the rest not so much. On the d/l and will try and give feedback after I've finished listening.

Gave this a listen the other day in the middle of the night. Always had problems with listening to dub unless it's under specific conditions. The intro is superb and I personally love the buildup in the set, it was well thought and the mood for the mix doesn't change too suddenly.

The mixing is decent, taking into consideration it was done on vinyl, the aesthetic is good per total. There was a track which was put in there (3rd or 4th) which didn't quite fit into the intro context (imo), but I guess you had your own reasons.

My only problem with this mix is that it feels a bit too rigid, but given as you're at the beginning when it comes to vinyl, it's understandable. Your previous Cathedral mixes were much more playful and artistically nonchalant (if this is even the term I'm looking for). I specifically remember the way you mashed Kunth's remix of "Vertigo" in between two other tracks, which was glorious as hell.

What gear did you use?

I quite enjoyed this - the flow is nice and smooth, the transitions are good, and I like how it progressed into more trancey and hypnotic tunes towards the end. I enjoyed playing League of Legends to this.

I did it with two technic 1200 ripoffs and a xone 22. Doing the kind of blends I did with traktor on wax would be incredibly difficult and i'd need a third deck or a CDJ so I can cue while the other records are running.

Literally the only techno DJ that that I can think of that still plays wax and does that sort of mixing is DVS1 (one of the most technically skilled club DJs on the planet), and he uses CDJs in addition to the decks.

Quiet a bit of investment in that gear.
