Edit: woops, I just learned she has autism. I've only been following this news briefly. My bad. |
A friend-of-an-acquaintance on Facebook commented the other day that because she is autistic, she is too mentally ill to participate in politics

I bang the environmentalist drum as much as anyone, and while this girl says all the right things, I find the deification of her by certain news outlets and idiots on my Facebook feed highly annoying. Every time she says some shit, no matter how obvious or how much of a repetition of what scientists have been saying for years, it's headline news. |
Yeah, the deification of her is rather strange.

Then you get people wittering on social media about what an inspiration she is. She's not an inspiration. She's 16 years old. It's easy for a 16 year old to go on "strike", since that amounts to not turning up to school for a day. What a hero. |
But I have to disagree with you about that, my friend. With so much anxiety about the future, I find that many youths are extremely concerned about their studies in high school/etc, so that they can go to a good university. For her to care more about the environment than her schooling seems rather inspirational to me. It's not like she did not go to school for just a day, she's missed months.

I just worry that if I find the circus around her this annoying, it's only going to have a counter-productive effect on all the environmental agnostics out there. It's the same way every piece of abnormal weather, whether it's snow or a heatwave, is "made more likely by climate change, scientists warn". Stop forcing the message, you shrill, insufferable bastards. |
I think this is a fair point, but I also wonder how anyone can still be environmentally agnostic and what we can do to change their minds.
I do worry also that it's simply too late and we need to start thinking about how we'll live in a warming world than how to stop it from warming.
