minidisk players/recorders?

i have never bought any minidisk stuff before, but seeing how useful it is for djing (recording sets, seeing how my comp. doesnt have that ability), recording, and transferring my music (seeing how i dont have a burner or mp3 player as of yet), and how many good things ive heard about MD players, i think i should get one.

which player/recorder would any of u recommend to me?

just pick one up from like your local best buy, I've had one for 5 years now. I had the first old school one, but I bought the 4 year service plan from Best Buy, and they replaced it everytime it broke. Finally after the 4th time they gave me all my money back and let me buy a brand new one. It's a sweet little deal, saved me so much money. But it broke so many times from me dropping it . Just find one that has the mp3/CD ripping software, that comes with the MD. I've had mine, and it works like a dream, with optical inline input....awwwwww...... Later,

Armando

Cant agree more, ive had mine for little over 9 months, well actually i have two. My recommnedations are the latest Sony, it can record at speeds of up to 32X unlike ure older models that record off playback. This is nice but its a pretty penny i believe somewhere around the tune of 400 dollars or so.

ooohhhhh. i checked em out online. there is another that is pretty nice, and it records at 32x that is only $200. the one that is around $400 has a LOT of extra little frills, that i can cope without.

time to put that holiday cash to good use! im headin downtown to the sony store! (lol. yea, in downtown chicago there is an actual sony store. they must have EVERYTHING sony under that roof. and its right across the street from NikeTown. I bet ya cant guess what they sell there?)

I was gonna get an MD player but wat made me change my mind was that the MD's do not let you Upload (transfer songs from MD to Computer).

So if you do record a set on your MD, it is a pain in the ass considering it doesn't even have a line-out so you end up using headphones, volume is very low and the volume wobbles.

Everything else is fkin amazing like battery life, quality, Amount of Space etc.

i like the MZ-N505, it transfers Mp3s at 32x has everything you need. now the 707 comes with like Case, better headphones etc. and it has more features.

Some MD's do come with a line out. Like the sony MZ-N1 or the N-10 (import) Although the MZ-n707 can be modified to have a true line out which is much better than the headphone out, with just a little editing of the systems settings. It can be found at forums.minidisc.org. Althouhg the rick won't work on N505's due to hardware limitations. Personally I've got a 707 and love the hell outta it, especially with the hack to it. Though If I ever have to send it in I've voided my warenty.

I would like to give my opinion on what CD brand you should buy.

If you want something that goes fast go with sony...
if you want something that have a better recording quality.. go with Sharp ! They are made for recording stuff... from digital, analog or even with mics....

There are only two reasons to pick a Sharp MD unit over one from Sony:

    1. More powerful headphone output
    2. Better microphone input

But Sharp's latest version of the ATRAC compression format is actually worse than the latest version of ATRAC from Sony.

hmm... are we talking about portables or stationary units? lots of mention of portables.

if your going to record a set, i'd advise against using a portable. generally thier inputs are not up to spec with a table unit.

I have two minidisc decks, both sony. I have the MXD-D3 which is a CD and MD deck, but only records MDs. it copies CD to MD at 4x. great box, love it. no digital out though.

I also have a sony MDS-JE510. Kinda ond, but works great. It's a simple inexpensive box that does the trick... toslink optical digital in and out, analog in and out... good enough for me.

If you just want a decent MD deck to record your sets with, pick up any recent sony deck. Make sure it has digital ins/outs if you want to transfer audio to the PC.

You can also pick up a fairly inexpensive soundboard for your PC that has toslink ins/outs also, so you can go from the MD deck to the PC with no loss in quality.

The link you wanted to upgrading a n707

http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=72

As to Meridian's comment about portables vs. stationary. Yeah that's a goodway to do it, but I don't have lots of money for a stationary unit, and a portable one. So The portable recorder was the best idea for me. That way I can record my set, and then listen to it outside of my house, which is what I wanted. True the quality isn't as good as it COULD be, but for me and my craptastic mixing it's just fine.
