I ran an online virus check and...

I certainally wasn't quite ready for all this. And these files couldn't be cleaned on it. I don't know anything about viruses so here's a few quick questions.

A) Is there any way these files can be disinfected?
B) What will happen if I just delete the lot of them? Is it important Windows files which have been infected and will damage the computer if I remove them or is it just useless files that have been added into the folder?
C) Is there any way around this or is this computer completely fucked?

I'm a bit worried about this. Today while browsing the net the computer just suddenly switched itself off for no apparent reason, and when I turned it back on it appeared at a resolution of 640 x 480 and when through a long and drawn process of reinstalling all outside components of the computer. Over the last few months I've noticed the computer has been getting very slow whenever I open more than a few applications at once.

A. probably with some anti-virus software, although maybe not all of them
B. all those readme.exe files are supposed to look like "readme.txt" to unsuspicious aoler, who, not knowing that a readme file shouldn't look like an exe file would click it
C. probably not. an antivirus proggie, a manual removal in a bad case, and a clean reformat in the worst case might do it for you. most likely, you have activated a trojan somewhere and the 14yo lamer kid shut down your computer through it.

make sure you have backups of the most important files, but check that they're not infected. get an antivirus addy ASAP.

Hmm, eml files are saved emails am I correct? What ever e-mail program you use it must be saving the attachments automatically, or if there is none, somehow gets in there. Heres how you fix it:

this is a common virus. it puts an eml or nws file in all your directories. annoyingly taking up hd space. just do a win+f and search for *.nws and *.eml and delete them all. worked for me.

so, who cares about disinfecting them, they're useless files put there by the trojan. delete them and never open any suspicious exe eml or nws files again.

.eml ARE USUALLY e-mail, but if they appear in random locations with unusual filenames then this shows evidence of the Nimda worm..

Get some decent anti-virus software mate...

Nimda is a complex virus with a mass mailing worm component which spreads itself in attachments named README.EXE. If affects Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 users.

Nimda is the first worm to modify existing web sites to start offering infected files for download. Also it is the first worm to use normal end user machines to scan for vulnerable web sites. This technique enables Nimda to easily reach intranet web sites located behind firewalls - something worms such as Code Red couldn't directly do.

Nimda uses the Unicode exploit to infect IIS web servers. This hole can be closed with a Microsoft patch, downloadable from: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/se...in/ms00-078.asp

The MIME exploit used by the worm can be fixed with this patch: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/se...in/MS01-020.asp

theres no need to worry. No virus can permanently kill a pc. Worse case scenario would be ur bios getting infected, which can still be cured anyway. But no worries about that, going by the viruses produced by ur search above. If u cant fix it, as a last resort u can always back up all ur music on cdr, and all important files etc. then "format c: /u" re-install everything, and then before dragging stuff back over from ur cdr's , make sure u run them thru a virus scanner first. And also get some virus scanner like norton that constantly monitors ur pc, and use that to scan every file that u bring onto ur pc..

See if you want to run your computer smoothly this is what you do:

1. Only works if you are the only person who uses the machine or your family doesn't care what happens to it.
2. Get your os and other heavily used apps burned to cd
3. format every sunday
4. reinstall
5. there, you don't even need anti virus software, takes up space anyways

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
I deleted all offending files.
I guess formatting is too much hard work, I'd need to burn my 12 GB of MP3's over about 20 CDR's on my shitty 2x burner so I guess I'll just have to live on with all the minor problems on the computer.
