| quote: | Federal Health Minister Anne McLellan said yesterday the travel alerts are an "overreaction," and if an individual takes "sensible and reasonable precautions, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't go to Toronto."
"I go to Toronto every week. I fly back and forth and through the airport, and I'm going to continue to do that," she told reporters. "There's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't. And you should go to restaurants in Toronto and you should go to the movies and you should be out and about spending ... money."
The minister said she's concerned about the potential for economic fallout if travellers heed the travel advisories, and suggested the federal government take steps to minimize the damage. Already a major conference of 12,000 cancer experts, that was to have been held in the city this weekend, has been cancelled, a loss that's estimated to cost city coffers millions.
"I think that it is probably a situation where our Department of Foreign Affairs, our embassies and consulates in various countries need to be out there making sure that people understand what is happening and isn't happening in this country." |
