Because I can't imagine a single reason to make the music more mainstream. This would mean more idiots who listen to it and infinitely more trash and epic, epic, EPIC trance.

More idiots listening to it doesn't mean everyone who's listening to it now suddenly becomes an idiot. I don't see what's wrong with that. Look at rock and rap - they're the most mainstream thing right now, the chart-topping tunes are full of crap, but if you scratch the surface there's alot of good stuff going on, and one thing's for sure: Their artists aren't all starving, and the genre isn't slowly crawling to it's death. Having trance become more mainstream will bring new people to it, and that's just what it needs to stay healthy.

On the other hand, if you fade it away from the spotlight and make it an underground thing again, how will you attract new people to it? Alot of people who listened to trance years ago have since moved on to other genres like house, techno or prog. If you don't keep attracting new people, the genre will die.

I'm not saying epic is bad, it just mostly sucks.

I'd turn it into a far less serious genre... to the point it would be fun (as in "you'd occasionally laugh during a set" or have the good old "what the heck" thought when listening to a song).

i'd say i would like that trance artists still release QUALITY trance, that's all.
Cinos get a point in the way that if it becomes more mainstream there will have more and more crap because of mass production, it's what is happening to the psytrance scene today...

Believe me, im a fan, but if we have one ruler of trance, it will fail... but tiesto is a god...

I think that djs should start useing more genres, like they are doing now... more remixs of "popular" pop singles, aka coldplay, etc.

And make it so everyone that doesnt listen think that all of the music is the same, thats the problem, everyone who listens to trance or w/e for the first time, they go "Oh, its techno, its the same crap / beat over and over again..."

I think the change is that Trance and other electronica genres need to show the "non trance" listeners that it is a music genre like none-other...

That's exactly what would kill it. It has happened to hardcore here before.

I'd say I agree with Derek, the only vaguely alternate state of mind most trance has been bringing me in lately is boredom.

Well said. I totally agree with you.

This 'underground' term is the reason nothing decent is coming out. Nothing gets supported widely enough to make it worthwhile producing.

Mainstream does NOT equate to idiocy. 1999/2000 was relatively mainstream, and those were golden years.

What would I do ? well

I'd prevent the death of marino stephano, leaving him able to continue his legacy of good works, I'd stop Oakenfold going shit. I'd stop all the remakes of classics and inject originality and creativity. I'd see all producers using only hardware, as it was fine when this was the case. There would be a good amount of money available to the people who were undoubtedly the best, ie. people such as oliver lieb, the ferry of 1998-2002, Origin, Vincent De Moor etc. I'd make tech-trance how it was, techy with only slight trance moments, not the 'tiesto' bandwagon that isn't anything like it used to be.

Progressive would go back to being melodic & progressing, and not just boring loops of fluff, people like quivver, cass & slide, tilt etc.

Andy Moor & Adam White would not ever get to be near a production studio, nor would many of the armada/electronic elements producers. Markus Schulz would go back to 'edge factor' days and judge jules would never have made anything by 'hi-gate'

wishful thinking huh ?
