idea for the next update: being able to surf through the database, maybe on alphabetical order..

That will actually be the next update, which will come quite soon Mayhaps tonight even...

Thanks for the comments folks, hope you all find it useful.

Hey dude,

I'm sure it's a pretty fine site... haven't had the time lately to check out the web. Lot's of things been happening. Will check it out when I get the chance.

Cheers
Nem

Harmonic Mixing Scares Me

This sounds badass. I hope I can do it though. I'll feel like a tool if I have to keep consulting databases to find out what key a track is in, and then look up what progressions are appropriate from the harmonic-mixing chart. But shit, I think I might be a tool for quite some time because this looks hard as hell. I mean, being able to hear a song and know what key it is being played in is something that can't be learned. I've played piano for almost 8 years now, I can play concert pieces, but if someone asks me to play a C# chord, I can't. I never bothered learning the theory...I might be paying the price now. I'm kind of afraid too since I'm not one of those people that can hear a chord played on the piano and tell you what it is. Shite, maybe I'm just not a true, natural musician?

I have to admit that I don't know that much music theory and you probably know more than me.
But I can hear what key a track goes in and I can also hear in my head what else would go with it... it's just a question of learning to think that way... (I think).

You don't have to use databases, they are just intended to help those that want to do it that way. You can mark your own records, and as long as you know how each record affects the other no biggie. It all comes if you practice enough. And it's all good fun.

Cheers
Nem

aye, maybe, but it's still intimidating. plus i've got the fear in me, what if i never learn to truly "hear" what key a track is in? i'm scared to pick it up now, cuz i don't know if any amount of practice can instill that ability into you, can it?

Sure it can, though I'm sure there are varying degrees of such an ability. Even if you can successfully guess the key in your head, I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to verify on a piano/keyboard or whatever. That way, you get practice and accuracy.

Dont stress over this, it's a proven musical fact that only a very small % of people (inculding music writers) can actually hear a chord and tell exactly the key being played...

but isn't that exactly what is required for successful harmonic mixing...i'd hate to always be dependent upon dabatases...plus it'd be hard to do an improv set.

Anyway, I just posted as much as was necessary to get it up as soon as possible. Many more improvements are on the way, and of course I'll also be adding many more tunes...possibly around 100 more or so within the next few weeks. Currently though there are 402 tracks, all of which came from mine and Nem's lists in this thread. Feel free to add ones from your own record cases if they aren't already in there.

Enjoy

Harmonic mixing is great, and so easy as well (well, for me because I already know a bit about music). I use my guitar to find keys.

Only one thing bugs me though... these numbers. Like 11A or whatever, that are next to the keys? I know all my major and minor keys/scales, etc, but I don't know what the hell these numbers are on about. I know it doesn't affect me but hey, I'm curious...
