Research? Ive been listening to Paul van Dyk's records since I was 14. ive seen his sound develop while all these fads (like 'trance') have come and gone. Avenue is hardly a trance track as the common usage of the term goes. If you want to make the definition of trance so wide as it includes avenue then thats up to you.

Dont ask me to do some research ... you think Avenue was made in 99

well the word trance was invented by the UK media to define precisely that style of music. Developing the definition of a made up genre seems like a pretty pointless exercise.

I didn't say Vega was slow BPM. Slow moving, compared to the Starecase mix. Bored me. And if Together Will Conquer is predominantly four to the floor, but has breaks breakdowns, that doesn't make it a breakbeat track. Hundreds of trance tracks have breakbeat breakdowns. Even if there are exceptions, you have to admit that PVD is predominantly a trance producer. I guarantee that more than half of the tracks on OTAB would be generally accepted as trance if not three quarters. I didn't think Avenue was on OTAB. It's not on the record set anyway. I had to buy the vinyl with Another Way/Avenue. I still agree with him that Avenue is trance. You might be able to classify it as tech-trance or maybe even acid trance?, but saying it's not trance seems incorrect. But, to each his/her own. I can respect your opinion. I have different views from a lot of people on what progressive is, and what falls under the progressive envelope as opposed to progressive trance.

avenue was released in 1999 i dont give a fuck when he made it i never asked him. if you know that it was made in 1997, good for you. and stop with the common usage of the term bullshit, if a track is trance its trance, if its techno, its techno. if you dont think it falls under the trance genre, then fine but many ppl will argue that it does.

Yeh I cant be bothered to have a genre debate. But I think it people should accept the possibility that not everything PvD does is TRANCE straight off. Hes never really been, historically, that kind of producer. And I think its more a case of the genre has been widened to include his stuff, rather than his stuff actually being definitive of the genre. I mean, when avenue was made, and Sasha & Digweed were playing it, people would have called it another epic house record.

re: Together We Will Conquer - its about 75% breakbeat id say.

I will give you PVD producing more than just trance. But even his out of trance genre tracks lean more towards trance than the average producer of that style. Especially his breaks. If you wanna talk epic house, that's a term that isn't even used anymore. When was the last time you heard to someone refer to a track as epic house. I think that's a term that got retired when the term trance came into effect. I will say that he has four mixes of "I never fuck" that I have and there are some very unique mixes, definitely not all trance. And I would be more likely to call some of his old remixes epic house than Avenue. Avenue's bassline and kick drum are not very housy at all, nor are the synth lines.

Unfortunately trance was being called trance long before 97.

well maybe, but they were the first people to really apply that term to cover a whole genre. The term has been banded about a little bit before that but they took it and applied it.

Point is - someone made it up, and yes all genres are made up. 'Trance' was invented to cover that style of music. Avenue isnt that style of music. But I understand that the definition has become so wide these days that looking back at it now people are going to call it trance.

But that wasnt what it was getting called at the time, and its not stereotypical of the 'trance' sound.

Yes but 'epic house' never meant 'house'. Epic house was just a term commonly applied to Sasha/Digweed/PvD/Nick Warren style music.
