I'm confident that Jenova plays a huge roll. Sephiroth is just a normal human. It's Jenova's cells that made him powerful. Same with members of SOLDIER. That article made sense to me.

i played FFVII twice, 60 hours the first time round just to get through it and 120 hours the second time to do absolutely everything and i thought i pretty much understood the story but the more i read the more i feel like i dont have a fucking clue!

The developers have, since, had questions regarding stuff like this asked at conferences, whether they were online or not. Also through Japanese publications!

Sure Jenova provided the power but I just don't see it being THAT important when the FFVII crew left the ending to Jenova simply fluttering around and possibly reused in the future. If the main enemy of the game was Jenova, the storyline would easily progress past Sephiroth's demise and the saving of the planet. The fact that the characters themselves comprehend what Jenova is and don't really do much but destroy whichever form of Jenova pops up before them shows that... well... they don't really find it the ultimate threat.
