It's funny, because I followed relatively the same path you did, but I personally did not get into trance (more of a house/breaks/hardcore guy) until about 97, though mostly through the industrial/goa tip.

By 99 I was completely fucking sick of the stuff. The same god damn template, the same anthems, the same snare rolls, the same breakdowns, the same hands-in-the-air hold-me-I'm-rushing melodies so fucking predictable you could set your watch to it, every single fucking song at every single fucking party, played by every single fucking trance DJ. It was boring. It was stupid. It was fucking ridiculous.

That was why it exploded. Because it had become this tepid, manufactured, feather-lite pap. Bullshit McTrance for the stupid majority of people who didn't like trance originally, until it started sounding like commercial crap sing-a-long jingles. The most memorable violation of a form of music since black funk became white disco in the late 70s.

^ this may not apply to you specifically, but I'm willing to bet it applies to 90% of the people on this web forum.

In the UK there was very limited accessability to trance between 93 - 96. Not many people had mtv and local radio was and still is piss poor. There was clubbervision on ITV @ 2 in the morning but that was about it. Hardcore and eurodance was much more available. I would say it wasn't really until Judge Jules moved from kiss to radio 1 that things stared to happen. Then the whole Ibiza scene kicked off big style around '96.

Kiss In Ibiza '96

anyone remember robert miles - children, bbe, alcatraz - give me luv, mighty dub katz

Ibiza uncovered and greece uncovered in '97 helped promote the music too.

I love the trance tunes from the early 90s as much as the stuff from '99. Without the internet its sad that I would prob never have come across most of them. A fair number of tunes from the early trance scene of 93/4ish? got remixed and released in '99

excellent thread... don't really have my collection in front of me to add, but some excellent songs have been mentioned. some have been left off as well. i'll come back later and add to the list.

sign me up for the time machine, haha. in a big way the internet has killed the experience (as mentioned before), but i'm glad mp3s of the essential mixes do still exist. those '99 em world tour 120 min sets never get old.

Yeah defently, thanks to all the people that posted all these tracks and livesets!, ill make my collection even bigger! I didnt experience but I'll have to say that Trance back then was so much better! All the tracks that were mentioned and other tracks that havent are, well Classics, they will never die. Yesterday i had a chance to listen to Paul Oakenfold - Live @ Gatecrasher, Lotherton Hall 1999-06-19 and its just a master peice! and when i listen to other older sets, its just so pure and natural! Now lets all hope someone creates a time machine! haha

You never know, I think I spent about $30 USD on my copy

In any case, '99 definitely had some of the best trance tunes ever released. Never think that new stuff isn't as good, I'm absolutely loving the new Digweed EM set, and I listen to the '99 Oakey EMs all the time. Just have to filter out the crap a bit more!

sets that are must haves from the era...

Sasha Live @ Alexandria Palace 01-01-1999

Sasha Live @ Gatecrasher 12-31-1999

Sasha Live @ Gatecrasher Summer Sound System 06-27-2000

every tune in these sets is perfect...they flow incredibly well and that is what the time period was about for me...every track played was great...

i think other genres are just as good...perfect example is digweed's global gathering set...

all of those dj's...zabs, sasha, fancuili, desyn, nick & jody, lawler, steve porter...

they are all at the top of their games and they are playing such a huge variety of sound and tracks i think what they are doing is recapturing that feeling...

armin and co...well...yeah
