For the most part, I agree with you. However, I think there are a lot of solid adaptations, especially as of late. I think one of the best has been Christopher Nolan (all of his Hollywood releases: Memento, The Prestige, the Batman series have been adaptations). Sin City is another example of a great adaptation, and a ballsy one at that. You also have the fantasy novel adaptations: Lord of the Rings series and Chornicles of Narnia, both effectively done.

I think the difficulty in adapting some of these books to the screen could arise for two reasons. First, often with a book you really can get in the characters head, hear their thoughts. With a movie you can't, aside from voice over's which must be used sparingly. So, while you may have a book that has excellent characterization, this could be all internaly happening and therefore would make for a piss-poor movie. Second, the story can be too "big" for a movie. I think this was demonstrated with the Da Vinci Code, as there was so much action that they tried to condense into the movie, there was absolutely 0 depth to it.

All that being said, I think with the number of successful and failed adaptations,you will probably always be wrong if you were to say adaptations aren't effective.
