Okay, let's drop the label issue. What other criterion do you want to bring in?

The criterion of not being well-known or well-liked? Fucking Depeche Mode? No way.

Not being as popular as some of the other groups of their day? Well, gee, that makes just about every band in history an "indie" band.

How is Depeche Mode "indie?"

And really, how is Depeche Mode even "not mainstream?" I love Depeche Mode, but they're neither non-mainstream nor indie.

Yes i know that. Unfortunately they sound nothing like their 90s/early 00s releases like "jigsaw pieces" for timewriter and "Landcruising" fro carl craig...

"indie" (from independent) is a vastly ill-defined broad description that categorises all these "genre/labels" etc. etc. etc. that can be very slightly different from the VERY mainstream stuff. It is not a genre. Yes depeche are mainstream now but they weren't in the "black celebration" period. It was only "music for the masses" that started spawning hits like "behind the wheel", but even that had an "alternative" feel to it. See wikipedia for what indie is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_music

I personally don't like the term as well. That's why i said in my original post that you COULD broadly categorise them as indie but then i mentioned that depeche more specifically belong to the new-wave/synth-pop genre. Thats all. You don't have to get mad or anything....grrrrrrr depeche are not indie....take it easy lol.

I know "indie" is not a genre. I don't think that "indie" is necessarily a bad term. It's just that it gets used in vague and inconsistent ways and too often seems to be used as a synonym for "whatever stuff I like better than bands who consistently put out chart-toppers."

This kind of confusion is what happens when people start using category terms as insults or praise. At least try for some kind of objectivity in classification...

From what i know, carl craig didn't have anything new the last years...it was all about remixes of some of his older tracks. Even if it was there was nothing so memorable. As for timewriter, "room of a million rainbows" was ok. The album had some good moments. Nice special IMO.

What i'm trying to say, is ok. you can find okish tunes. But, damn, thats all there is to it. There is NOTHING exciting going on at the moment. EDM suffers a huge backlash. It seems that its huge mainstream exposure has done only bad to this music.
