Most (not all) international DJs that come to Toronto on a regular basis are overrated.
As for Tiesto, the hype is so big with him ... I don't think there is a DJ in the world that can match that sort of hype with talent.
What makes a DJ overrated typically is the hype, which in most cases is created by fans and people who go to see that DJ's show.
Interestingly, in Europe, people don't tend to create such crazy hype around any one DJ. In Holland, Tiesto can still be spotted occasionally spinning at small cafes or lounges, and nothing crazy happens like wild fans doing something stupid. People just act normal, even if they're right beside Tiesto in a cafe. Something like that would not be possible in a city like Toronto, as Tiesto would quickly get mobbed by fans, and something stupid likely would happen.
There are plenty of legendary DJs and international stars that have come to Toronto once or twice, yet there has been very little hype. That happens for a simple reason; the masses of clubgoers and people in general aren't familiar with that certain DJ, so thus no ridiculous hype is created.

I think he meant it more as he doesnt care what ppl think of the music/DJs he likes, as opposed to their opinions of music they like,
in which case i completely agree.
No one should really care about ppl's opinions about the music/DJs they like imo
Interesting to read, but nothing to care about

Yeah I realize that, but again, isn't that the point of the msgboard? Discussing open opinions, challenging ideas?
If you find other people's opinions (in relation to yours) so pointless, then why bother sharing in the first place?

I don't find other ppl's opinions pointless at all, especially in relation to mine.....i actually find 'em really interesting.
I wish there were more threads that were mainly ppl's opinions/analyses of whatever mixes. ex. Danny Howells - Essential Mix thread
Those are the most intriguing to read imo.
Its just that these opinions would never influence any of my tastes, as they wouldn't yours i'm guessing.

You're kidding yourself. No one would recognize Tiesto here. Unless he went to a coffeeshop filled with TAs.

That's not necessarily true, directly... probably not. But people's opinions on ANYTHING generally affect my take on any given subject. If even to better understand why people "hate" something only sheds more light on a topic.

Thats a good point, I agree to a greater extent.
I guess thats one of the reasons i love reading opinions so much.
Ex. though, as much as I enjoy Matthew Dekay, no one'e opinion will make me like him any less,
but it will give another angle to the understanding of his sound/style.
That in itself is what gets me to analyze ppl's thoughts and in turn makes opinions so interesting.

Ultimately, as your EDM listening hours total into the thousands, you raise the bar regarding what you consider to be 'impressive' (aka NOT 'over-rated').
After all this listening you carve out a sound that you like -- tracks/sets that are outside your comfort zone are automatically heard by you in a different way - you don't even notice it - Different how? Well, you'll be paying much more attention to it, making it even easier to pick out/reference/criticize what it is you don't like.
Enter the International DJ - hype and hype all over the place blah blah blah. You hear/attend a few sets and you just can't get enough, until you come across the first completely SHIT one and realize that there are limits to what they can do -- especially when it comes to pumping out an impressive tracklist/mix gig after gig -- this is their job, they can't innovate every damn night - all that matters is that the crowd in attendance enjoyed their outing.
That said, some of you need to relax on your dj/genre worship/hate and open your minds a little.

No, you're wrong because one Essential Mix doesn't do Danny Howells justice. There's more to Danny Howells than what you've heard on that Essential Mix. And there's certainly more to him than what you'd even hear in a club. This is why he has so much respect among a few of us here, because unlike 90% of the DJ population out there he has a real depth to his sound that you only appreciate the more you listen to him.
On top of all this, your experience in listening to House is pretty limited, so more than likely you're not really appreciating him the way one should. It's like me listening to one mix by some D'n'B god and then saying "yo this guy is so overrated". Heck, that was my opinion on techno for the longest time, until finally I just "got it".
