I did have some vague thought while I typed that post that in America the word "learnt" is not used? Is that correct?

Also, big question: "while" or "whilst"?

Example:

Hence why you should be far better at it, you are exposed to it all year round for your whole life. It's like you're constantly studying, as opposed to the non-native speaker who has a limited amount of time to learn, and decreased exposure.

The best way to learn a language is to live in the country that it is spoken.

Nobody communicates fluently in day to day life taking care of the grammar and all. The ability to write or speak flawlessly is largely an academic skill. You develop the ability only if you study the language rigorously as a subject.

"Learned" = An adjective to described a well educated person. "The professor is well learned in the subject of grammar".

"Learnt" = A verb to describe learning a certain fact in the past "He learnt that his grammar was incorrect".

However, a little research reveals that, in American English, "learned" is in fact correct to use in both cases.

It's ironic, some of you Americans in this thread are sticklers for spelling and/or grammar, yet the butcherig of the English language is completely and utterly ingrained in your whole country!

There's probably a whole lot of words you spell incorrectly (anywhere but America anyway) that you don't even know about...
