I've not bothered reading Ishkurs article, I've pretty much gathered what he's been saying by what the numbskulls on here have replied with, I took a look at Cusicks article, and in typical Cusick style it's an attempt to be the all seeing, all knowing god of the prog world (at the time maybe), when in actual fact he's a fucking noone, nowhere, washed up baby, who'd look better dead (DYSWIDT)

Bullshit. The details of execution are always known in BT's albums. Somnambulist from Emotional Technology is in the Guiness Book of Records for its amount of vocal edits, but if you're going to tell me that Emotional Technology was an album marketed as maths music you're a fucking idiot.

the fact you've quoted his production shit being in the GBR, and then condemning someone for saying he's all about the maths/production is ridiculous.

it's quite clear to me that BT is fantastic producer, and thats not something that should be in question. His artistic side however is.
Surely he's not all that?, I've only ever been seriously impressed with the antikytheria mechanism (or whatever the fuck it's called), the rest just leaves me cold thinking of some rich **** with time on his hands cos he thought of a few nice chords a decade ago. Congratualtions, he can stutter a fucking beat like few others, it doesn't mean he's the untouchable talent, if his shit was that good more people would have hired him as their producer after that dogshit pop album he produced ( I forget the name of the shit boyband he did), which is another point in the now rapidly growing opinion (thank fuck), that the guy is shit all unless there's someone with some artistic talent behind him, cos there certainly wasn't any behind the backstreet boys record (or whatever the fuck it was) he produced.

good producer, shit ideas, END THE FUCK OF

this response really sums up the intelligence of the argument against BT. So I guess you agree with the DJ MAG polls right? and you would also agree with what the radio plays right? I mean if techno was really good then people would play it on the radio right? If DJ 'insert a name of who you like and winds up being left off the list' was so good surely everyone would like him/her. Something can be really good and still go under the radar or be underappreciated. If everyone caught hold of everything good in the world, we'd all be rich, but we aren't.

no, it's a niche market dickhead, you're not going to have "pop" techno record because the majority of "pop"ulus are fucking idiots

the list means shit, if it was based on talent, very few of the 100 would be there

lots of things can go under the radar but the point I was making you clearly missed, BT's production skills are fucking incredible, thats why he didn't go under the radar and was hired by some bullshit boyband to produce their record. The point I was making was that without any artistic input, despite his FUCKING FANTASTIC production skills, it makes him painfully fucking average.

apart from you, because you are an actual idiot.

Why? I'm pretty sure Bohemian Rhapsody once held the record for vocal edits, but that doesn't mean Queen had no creativity because of production obsession. Besides, Emotional Technology is a completely different album to This Binary Universe. BT's attitudes on each one were completely different. What was true of over-production on ET isn't automatically true on TBU.

BT loves to do things with production simply because he's a geek, but as I've said, on TBU that doesn't necessarily make the track sound any different, good or bad. Distant himself asked what the point of writing a track in code is, because it didn't sound any different to the others. This would in itself seem proof that BT's production tricks don't have any noticable effect on the music- it's just something he decided to do. Unless you were told, you wouldn't know that 1.618 was composed around the Golden Ratio. If anything, it's cool simply because BT did it and you can't tell. To make a piece of music that sounds like it was composed conventionally and yet had the obstacle of a specific parameter to meet is impressive on a level completely removed from music.

It's like Tubular Bells. The technical process of recording Tubular Bells was hugely impressive, because Mike Oldfield didn't have nearly enough channels on his tape deck, and so a huge amount of the playing on Tubular Bells is overdubbed on recorded tape. One mistake by Oldfield would have ruined the entire channel. However, this doesn't mean Tubular Bells was creatively stifled because of the technical achievement, or even that Tubular Bells' inlay now having this fact means it's being sold on technical merit. Most people won't know that fact and it doesn't matter if they did.

Quite simply, I don't see the production as being a valid complaint about TBU, because I don't think you can hear it, which has been untrue on previous BT albums. In my review of ESCM, I wrote:

quote:
...there's the constant impression this album was looked at far too much at a minute level, and never observed as a coherent whole.

But of TBU I wrote:

quote:
The impression you occasionally got was that you were listening to a sonic tech-demo or an exercise in doing things for their own sake. Everything here is pressed to use, and the production feels toned down in comparison to BT of old.

Unless someone wants to point out examples contradicting this, I maintain it isn't a valid criticism of TBU. Doubtless you won't give a shit about anything I've just wrote, but there it is anyway.

No. I think it's a fantastic aparatus and probably the best on the market for mixing digital music on the fly.

There's a downside to its popularity, however, in that the vast majority of DJs who use it exclusively have no fucking clue how to use it properly.

To be honest, his porn references are quite sophomoric. He's going to have to watch a lot more porn to know what he's talking about there. Not one lolscatokkakkeshower reference to be seen.

Great work, champ. And the pointless whining makes it even better.
