i know i wasnt there and all but to say that joel sucks or that he doesnt deserve to play in the main room is rather bullocks. i think its a great achievement for him and that he deserves it. to be from a particular area (in this case southern ontario) and to have become such a hit around the world, to be able to play in your local superclub mainroom (in which case is highly ranked) is like a violinist playing at carnegie hall.
mr mau5 is a producer first, then dj. im sure in time, he'll learn more the ropes of what to play etc to cater more to your needs. but from what ive heard from the majority, he did very well and pretty much everyone liked it (gino/commercial/hands in the air crowd or not).
anyhoo, thats the end of my little rant. live long and prosper

"techmology... is it good... or is it whack" - Ali G.
my take on it is this... make music, record music, play music, have fun, help others have fun.
not sure what you meant by "losing quality" when you play a CD... granted 99.9% of the tracks released in the last num,ber of god knows how many years were digitally produced albeit the mighty "render" at 24 / 16 bits... which gets transfered sample accurate to CD.. at... 16 / 44.1...
hey but thats cool, some guys like the sound of vynl, and thats pefectly fine too. whatever works for you.
im a technology guy myself... so as it becomes available, i exploit it by whatever means possible... everyones got their own way of doing things... but the argument parralell to "is it still cool to wash your clothes on a rock in the river...sure. just dont fuckin shit on me coz i use a maytag" always managed to irk me a bit.
the lovely bit about ableton + other software is that its as simple.. or as complex and technically challenging as you want to make it.
for instance... yeah, in effect, you could load up 2 columns of tracks , add hitpoints, hit play, xfade, and voila.
of course to me, that'd be boring. sure it would probably sound fine... but some others (including james) also use laptops as an integral part of their DJ set.
my setups changing every month or so... new hardware comes out, new controllers, new software, etc etc... but ive found a fun little way of delivering a "quasi live" set by controlling various aspects over the Lemur / Monome 256 / EFX1000 / djm800 etc etc...
having something to "beatmatch for you" while your doing 5 other things at the same time at this point is pretty much a nescessity... then its all about grabbing loops, resequencing drum patterns, isolating tracks to route to external effects... it can get pretty nutty and fun.
