Someone make some sense out of this...

Just remove yourself from the situation right now. You are not the fixer-upper.

When the tension dies down, if/when he remains in custody, if/when he is admitted to rehabilitational care, if/when he is allowed visitors - then go talk to him. Right now though, he will most likely perceive the commotion around him as validating his behaviour.
