so im about ready to give up on this one...

mobo hasnt arrived yet, but i realized its a micro atx with onboard audio only (not enought PCI slots for all my cards), most likely will not be able to exceed 512 max, and i would need two DIMM for that anyways. the Tualatin 1.13 WAS the unstable recalled one, and primarily for edge servers...and i coulda bought a 1.0ghz p3 coppermine that would have swapped perfectly for the same price (8 bucks)

i will prolly mess with the mobo when it gets here, but thats wasted money most likely. hopefully i can send the mem back for a refund as an exchange would be another 50 still for just 512. i dont think i can get rid of the 1.13, but there is a slim chance i could exchange that under warranty for the 1.0 chip.

basically this has ended up a clusterfuck and i spent too much money. (100 bucks lol)

but on the brightside i do have a 60 gig HD bumping my total up to 100gigs...woot. and i will make the very late switch to xp with the new sp.

i feel dumbfounded, but not because of your advice Ben, mostly because most of the research was out there and straight-forward and i let excitement get the best of me. i am glad for the experience and wouldnt have done anything if not egged on!

now, maybe in another month if i can be frugal i need to figure out if i should look into something fancier.

a socket 750 mobo that can go low in the p4 or pd up to the dual cores - for more money and less hp now...

or a cheaper, but slightly faster(in the short run) AMD set up...

www.pricewatch.com and get a good brand name mobo with a 1.86 core2duo and 1gb of ram. $200 and it will just drop right in your current setup.

yeah well we will see...not for a little bit tho.

i dont think im gonna keep this dell case tho, the fan is piddly and i have one side off of it for airflow most of the time. i will deffo keep up on pricewatch and possible get a decent case/powersupply first (since they dont get obsolete as quickly. then check out a mobo/cpu setup and then move onto drives and vid cards, et al.

mostly what i want is some expandability. nowadays, unlike in 2000(before AMD) you couldnt easily upgrade within the mobo to a better proc, etal. that has changed somewhat|

^might as well go with that monitor, I have the same one and it's pretty nice. No dead pixels or anything.

^two of these versus the RAM you have

^I would probably go with that video card instead of the one you have, if you're looking to stay within the $100 range.

If you're getting quad-core processors, why the weaksauce video card? I would definitely upgrade your card to something at least 512MB, or bump down to dual core processors.

Your first mistake. Never make suggestions on parts before asking what the target usage is. He doesn't need a massive video card, as it is a production machine. 512mb is massively unnecessary and useless.

Second, Acer = SHIT.

Third, getting 2gb instead of 4gb for a production machine is murder. Max ram you can afford always. Same with HD.

#1. Didn't think of production, just assumed since he was going for quad-core that he was building a gaming machine.

#2. The reviews on NewEgg for the monitor seem to think otherwise. On top of it, I own it and it's working just fine.

#3. Said to get two of the 2x1GB. 2x2=4. No reason to waste money on the 2GB stick, unless he plans on going to 6GB or 8GB of RAM in the near future.

#2....I just remembered, that even though acer = shit, there are only 3 major LCD panel manufacturers in the world. Samsung, LG, and Sharp. And since they are sourcing them from one of those three, it is good either way. Sorry, my bad.

#3. I would agree if it wasn't a production machine, but considering it is, the potential is there to go more than 4gb later, as production software can get pretty memory and cpu intensive.
