i've always wondered this myself, North America, is one of the only places in the world, (save for certain Islamic countries where alcohol is prohibited altogether), where you can't openly drink in public. More specifically, within North America, Toronto I've found has some of the strictest drinking laws in Canada.
I don't understand what the issue is with all the overprotectionism that comes from the city and province concerning quality of life. Are we any less responsible than Las Vegas, Miami, or New Orleans with their more lenient laws when it comes to alchohol? You don't even have to go that far when in Montreal you'll find off licenses and very relaxed policing when it comes to drinking in public.
I too blame the 'fun' police..

I'm with you on this and everything else, same with what Graham had said.
As for the cold attitude, it's more prevalent in the suburbs IMO but I have noticed it in TO. Usually when I have gone down there probably because on weekends it's filled to the brim with suburbanites!
I finished work last night, walked to the bus stop, chatted up this younger woman there, (9:30pm) she seemed friendly enough. It was just the two of us there, then while on the bus, I said "Ciao, bye" after, no response.
Why are people in the suburbs so cold like that? (or in the GTA it seems)
The nanny political/police issues are crazy too...we're all adults, let us make our own decisions. At least with certain agreeable things.

I refer to toronto anti social behaviour and attitude as "TASBO". Taken from the British "ASBO" which stands for Antisocial Behaviour Order". Obviously the T is for Toronto. Certain antisocial crimes are called ASBO crimes in the UK and many people who are a bit off are also referred to casually as ASBOs.
I think TASBO fits the majority around here quite perfectly. Because to be quite honest, collectively there are certain behaviours in Toronto that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else on the planet.
I tend to think that sometimes you really are invisable as you walk through the public here. You can look at people, talk to them and its as if you are a ghost. I rarely find that kind of non interaction elsewhere in the world.
My favs though are the famous toronto 30 second conversations. If you dont get everything in within the first 20-30 secs you lose your chance. LOL! TASBOs have the attention span of a squirrel it seems LOL!

Urban Dictionary:
| quote: |
TASBO
Taken from the British ASBO (Anti Social Behavioural Order). A term to describe the antisocial and stand offish behaviour of typical residents of Toronto Canada. Symptoms include a hesitation to talk to strangers, rude icey stares, shortened conversations, and general overcompensation for a heightened sense of insecurity.
"When I walked into the room, nobody acknowledged my presence. I guess they don't like me?"
"No, don't worry, they are just a bunch of TASBOs."
