looks like the party may have went off with a bang since there are no reviews yet of this.

I got there around 11:15 and James had the dance floor pretty packed considering what time it was on a Friday night. Lots of people going nuts - good job James

Gareth's set was simply amazing for me. So many great tracks (but don't ask me to name any of em cause I suck at that). The place started to clear out around 2:30 for some reason - probably the regular unwitting RS crowd not being into trance/vocals. Gareth came down off stage after his set to take pics and chat - he's a really nice guy.

I left shortly after because my body was jarred from the usual loudness. Some guy said my earplugs were a good idea and wondered if this was the only "techno" club around. It was good to see most of the TAs were there through the end of Gareth's set.

Boy did this party go off! I stopped by the sushi place around 8pm for a quick bite to eat and had a chance to meet a few of the TA's that were there early, unfortunately I had to leave for the club right as the food was being served. The sound guy was still setting up and testing when I got to the club so I could have stayed at sushi a little longer but it was nice to settle in before the show started + it gave me a chance to try out a couple of my own productions on the club system!

I really wasn't sure how the night would do, I was promoting it for weeks and had a good response on my guestlist but you still never know for sure... I am happy to report that the club was pretty full, not packed like some nights but still it was a solid crowd. So many friends and people I know were there dancing and having a good time. It did not feel like the typical ruby skye crowd to me, I could feel this crowd more and people were definitely having a good time!

After my set I was walking around a lot talking to people and enjoying Gareth's set which progressed nicely and he really ramped up the energy by the time he finished at 3am the room was pumping at 141bpm the crowd had started slowly clearing out after last call which is typical for ruby on a friday night, I went back on and played about 4 songs before they turned the lights on... not much of a closing set but it was still fun to at least throw on a couple of new full on trance tracks I've been dying to play at the club!

Over all I had a great night and I thank everyone who came out and made the party so enjoyable! I look forward to hearing others experiences and perspective of the night.

Until next time!

what an awesome night. came in around 1130 and James was tearing it up. Gareth's set was just awesome, loved his track selections. Danced all night! good to see familiar faces, it was a great night.

Interesting you should comment about this... I feel like ruby skye can be way too loud sometimes, it suddenly hit me last time when I was playing with blank & jones just how friggin loud it was and also the fact that I don't think the system needs to be turned up that loud. Past a certain level it just becomes noise to me... Does anyone else feel this way?

Many DJs (myself included) get so use to pushing a sound system to it's limit, cranking the master volume all the way up, pushing the meter right to the edge if not into the red... Ruby's sound system is world class and according to an older article I was reading it is capable of over 60,000 watts of power.

quote:

For amplification, Lacina designed a mix of three Lab.gruppen FP2400 Quad amps, three Crest Pro Series 7001s for the mids, three Crest 9001s for the lows and five QSC PL6.0s for the subs, for a total speaker system power handling capacity of 40,700 watts, with available amplifier power of 61,520 watts.

Full Article

Last night I made a concious effort to keep the volume level in check - loud but not TOO loud, Gareth had never played at Ruby and ultimately he turned it up after I was done but I am interested to hear what people out in the audience thought about last night and just this subject in general.

Thanks!
JW

past few times i've been to ruby the volume was cranked up to uncomfortable levels. the worst time was with Armin last year 7/15/07 at Ruby. even with my etymotic ear plugs it was still wayy too loud to enjoy.

nice meeting some new people at the dinner... and then great walking into the club and hearing james already banging it out so early and crowd totally digging it.

as everyone is saying, awesome track selection by gareth. he played just over 3 hours. he played lots of crowd pleasers, hit after hit, and touching on everything from house to prog to trance, but all superbly paced. that was also some of the most attentive listening i've done in a while.

lots of TAs and other regulars in attendance... i didn't realize so many of us were fans of gareth. and then it was very nice of him to come to the floor and hang out with everyone while james got in a few more tracks.

as for the volume, i was wearing my etymotic ear plugs all night, and volume was comfortably loud to me... meaning that for those without earplugs, it was probably too loud, and a couple people did mention that is was exceptionally loud. but i still think it was well balanced than the overwhelmingly bass loud that occasionally happens at ruby.

this was my second time shooting at ruby skye. decided that i had to shoot iso1600 and be willing to accept more noise to match the kind of colorful shots i can get at 1015 with iso400. and then slowly starting to get the hang of camera settings during the course of the night...

Great sets from James and Gareth....
James had some killer tracks in there! I got there pretty early and then went outside for a few minutes before 12, when me and my friend came back, we thought Gareth was on already throwing down his opening track, until we noticed he was standing in the back corner of the stage! haha...
Great work James! I was trying to get your attention and say thanks for the GL and to tell you about your set, but you just thought I wanted a CD! haha....

Overall, Gareth had a great set & track selection. I thought at the start, a few of his transitions did not go over too well from what I noticed, but towards the middle/end of his set, he was killing it... I was totally waiting for him to throw down this song, and he did!

Daniel Wanrooj - Avalanche

I told Gareth to give us a shout out on the next Podcast, and he said just email him before Wednesday. I'll ask him to give a shout out to SF TA's....

p.s. The sound is always way too loud at Ruby... I thought the sound level when James was on was perfect, then BOOM, crazy loud... I'm a little worried about how it will sound when Yoji comes to town...

Thanks for the earplugs JonMitz! It was nice meeting you....

LOL didn't everyone want a CD? You are welcome for the guestlist, thanks for the support!

2tall: Awesome Pictures!

JonMitz: Great meeting you and hanging out at sushi before the show, thanks for sticking around for my closing set too. Good job organizing the meet-up

I wanted to come last night but this work week killed me. James, heard you did a great job. Good work buddy!!

I saw Gareth last year for Lovefest when he played the Local Love float and also his set at 1015. Great personality and I've always enjoyed his productions. He was a big influence on the sound i was looking for then.
