Well personally. i think ruby sky is ok. sound system is cool except for the air condition being in the front of the dj booth. But for 1015, it sucks that hip hop is taking over. I remember the good old days when armin use to go to 1015. those were the real days. the sound system then was good. everything was good. good crowd and everything. But of course, thats when spundae was promoting it. i dont know if its so much of the promoters, its who they bring. It sucks that the main room is hip hop now. hip hop brings violence from my point of view. also, i think 1015 need to upgrade the sound system and the djs. they dont have the same dj like they used to so of course you're not gonna see the same crowd like before. Trance is here to stay, no doubt bout that. Now that trance dj like sean tyas gets to spin in small little room instead of big rooms, it makes u wonder as a dj if its even worth coming. Bottom line is that 1015 needs to get bigger djs. And i'm sure that will solve the problem. Ruby sky is cool. oh yea, the security at 1015 are bunch of ass. thats for sure

even from an outsider's perspective, 1015 has never been good with business management or communication. in the past that reality could be masked by a good economy sending people through the doors, but when things get challenging it becomes really apparent. in my experience it's never been a secret in this town either. this sort of passive-aggressive infighting is merely a product of that internal culture run amok. it's the kind of thing you don't see or hear about with any other clubs or promotion groups in sf, or any successful business for that matter. it's all so contrary to how i see the rest of the scene here operate--collaboratively. who is the gm that allows these kinds of corrosive attitudes to exist and persist between inside promoters? that's the first guy that should be fired for incompetence.
the only way for 1015 to build anything is for everyone to work collectively towards a common goal. i don't even think clearly-defined goals exist within this business. this is where the owner fails everyone. why are these two guys even being made to compete for resources? it's not enough that 1015 can't even compete with other clubs and promoters, you want your employees to compete with each other? this business should have plenty of money for both people to prove their worth independently and thrive mutually by booking the talent of their respective interests week in and week out without having to hijack one another.
mr. ten15, you should be communicating whatever internal issues you have privately and constructively, not publically and judgmentally. you don't get things done by throwing others under the bus and dragging them through the mud. you actually make things harder on yourself that way. you especially don't criticize others where you haven't shown any outstanding degree of effort or competence yourself. if you're the one making phenomenal flyers and selling the club out on your nights, maybe.
all this bickering over trivial shit like flyers and email blasts mean nothing and will ultimately make no difference until the club starts from the top and correctly identifies what's fundamentally wrong, prioritizes what needs to be done and sets forth a well-defined plan into action. part of that plan should be finding a knowledgeable, competent, diplomatic general manager, a true leader, who has a broad working knowledge of the local entertainment scene and an owner who sits back and listens more than anything else. once everyone is on the same page, there's no reason why this club couldn't be the best in the city. before then, it will continue waxing and waning at the very bottom of the food chain. just my 2 cents.

on another note... i'd love it if the main room featured house and techno acts along with trance, but the key to making those nights successful is serious commitment and serious promotion. hawtin and tenaglia are big enough names to pull their own crowds, but when you start experimenting with lesser names in these genres, it will really be the promotion aspect that means the difference between a good night and bombing. if you bag the right rising star at the right moment when his name is out there, but his fees aren't through the roof, you can enjoy a huge windfall from that night and from locking in a relationship with that talent. in the beginning it might take the assistance of outside promoters to bring in new crowds, to acclimate the sf night life scene to this wave of change at 1015. the current main room crowd might not be receptive to these new sounds so it's imperative that you reach out to those people that are, pull them into the club. because for the longest time 1015 has developed the rep of being a club dedicated to trance headliners and not much else. it's what the club is known for. repositioning to encompass the diversity of sf's house and techno crowd will take consistency to foster real change. the current scene has these genres well-established with other promoters at other venues. if you're gonna try and stir the pot to get in on the action, you have to push and push hard.
it would also be nice for a change to walk into 1015 and not have to hear hip hop immediately, predictably. there are many clubbers who love electronic, can't stand hip hop, who appreciate those venues where they can go and hear good electronic music the second they walk through those doors. it might not seem like a big deal, but walking into endup, ruby, vessel, mezzanine or mighty and immediately getting into the music as i enter the club is something i've never experienced at 1015 and it's a good feeling. 1015 is a multi-room, multi-genre club and it should play with formats more. try house in the front, hip hop in the basement, breaks upstairs, trance in the main room one night and breaks in the front, house in the main, trance in the basement, hip hop upstairs another. variety is the spice of life and it's what keeps things interesting week in and week out. the more you change things up and keep your patrons on their toes, the more interested they'll be in finding out what's happening next weekend. it also isn't a bad idea to cycle these different crowds throughout the club to keep the idea of exploring the place out there.
i think the important thing to keep in mind though is when playing with change, results may vary greatly depending on what your competitors are doing the same night or how seriously your event was promoted to achieve those results. poor results should be looked at carefully before judgment is handed down. if some fresh act has less than stellar results, it doesn't mean it's a bad idea to move in that direction. it probably needs more time and more work to get the results you're after. rebranding a club and changing long-held perceptions throughout the scene will be a slow process that involves consistency and persistence. it will take many leaps of faith, big risks, some stumbling, but ultimately huge rewards.
