So true. I've heard a few badass trance tunes (PvD's PoD 2, a few tracks throughout the years etc) that have full on elements of other genres but aren't cookie cutter, they're used in creative ways too. This is why I'm so picky w trance djs and haven't really found someone that made me go 'wow', I haven't really looked though to those who push for originality.

I instead went towards techier stuff or the housier type of music that IS filled with melodies now. How ironic that the trance that had tons of quality melodies and beats is/was now found in house.

It mainly depends on the DJ playing, and if they bothered to tweak the sound the way they want. Yes, usually during MO's sets, the bass and volume are too high. But, the good headliners will make sure the sound is good.

Every single week between 2004-2005... Once, sometimes twice a month through 2006, every once in a while these days. It always is, and always has been the same stupid shit with the Guv sound. It's GREAT until the headliner hits the decks, then someone turns up the bass dial (and the master volume) and all I can hear and feel is "BRR BRRR BRRR BRRR BRRR BRRR" Guv's sound system sounds like that stupid kid in school who thinks that the Bass in their car system is 'sick' because it sounds like a static-pulse every beat. (think, blown-out speaker, and I'm pretty sure Guv has at least ONE blown-out speaker along the washroom side of main-room, they should check that out)

Bass should be crisp, clean and thumpin. And it sure as hell shouldn't drown out the highs and mids the way it does in Guv main. When I think of good sound, I think of Destiny parties at The Docks, and Footwork week in and week out... those are sound crews that know what they're doing. And I'm not holding my ears in pain if I forget my earplugs by 1:30.

I don't think this is entirely true; there's quite a lot of "different" trance out there nowadays and some of it does very well.

I hate tech-trance remixes of trance songs. Period. And it especially pisses me off when people defile a classic by replacing its melodic climax with BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM ...

Beyond that, I don't mind the mashups at all. Gareth Emery's version of This is That with The Silence laid over top was really nice.

Do you remember Rio's (VIVA) sound system? I swear that system was hands down one of the cleanest sound system in the city. The bass was soooooooooooo fuckin crisp and the mids and highs were jut right.

I was going to mention Viva too and I agree with you completely. Very clean and crisp. I didn't include it in my 'top' list because I found it too loud sometimes, but at least I could hear ALL the music because it was balanced properly.

Volume is important too (what do other think on this? I personally feel that if I talk loudly into someone ear... like, not quite yelling, they should be able to make out what I'm saying... some clubs make it near impossible to say ANYTHING to eachother without yelling into ears), but first and foremost is the balance. Do DJs control this themselves or is it usually done by a club crew? When I play music I often find myself changing the bass and treble balance certain ways for certain songs to bring out elements that I really enjoy. Do DJs do this too? I've never noticed.

Got in the Drink for 10:45
Checked coat, mistake
Free Rev was nice
Watching fight break out while consuming free rev, amusing

Rank1 - Piet is great, any time. Enjoyed his set.

Garth - Nice selection of tunes.
Way out West - Killa (Orkida) was happy to hear this, been a while

Meno - Was okay, but by 4 am it was time to go home.
Was a drag having to chase coat from Drink coat check to Guv coat check.
