If you know what you're doing, you can do FM just fine on the Thor. Problem is, is that you have to understand the audio rate routings in the bottom section of the mixer, and properly set up the envelope scalings.
I cut my teeth on a DX-100, a tiny little 4-op keyboard, before moving onto owning TWO TX-81z (rackmount 4-op synth with multiple waveforms). Still have one sitting in the rack collecting dust...
