The U.S. employed electronic listeners in Vietnam to detect enemy movement. While the war in Vietnam was decidedly unpopular, it could hardly be argued that a surveillance tool was ostracized by society, at large. They were otherwise inanimate objects with little ability to hold a social position, making your assertion ultimately unlikely.
