3) Does "hill" sound like "hiw"?
4) "Chance" and "ants" sort of rhyme, right?
5) "Grasp" sounds like "grarsp", but there's no way in hell "castle" sounds like "carstle"! True or false?
6) Please record the following sentences: "Hey Lira, please answer the phone, you have an incoming phone call. Come on, mate, pick me up, lol!" or something similar. I need a new ringtone
7) "Ale" begins with the same vowel as "at". Right or wrong?

1. No. The 'a' and 'e' sounds are quite different.

2. Almost identical. I think I say 'lad' slightly quicker than I do 'bad', but it's the same sound.

3. Not at all. Huge difference between 'l' and 'w' sounds.

4. Yes, they sort of do.

5. I pronounce grasp like 'grahsp'. There's no real pronunciation of the 'r' the leads into the 'sp' sound. Similarly, I pronounce castle like 'cah-sel' (or more specifically, it would be 'cah-sl'). Here's a recording:

http://www.sushipunk.net/Random/Sus...sp%20Castle.mp3

6. Pick up your phone, Lira! It's not the same as what you wrote, because it didn't sound natural. It still sounds a little unnatural, but - Recording:

http://www.sushipunk.net/Random/Sus...ira%20Phone.mp3

7. Ale is a different 'a' sound to 'at'. At is very short, whereas ale's a sound is almost 'ay'. Ayle, if you like, though more like 'Ail' (as in an 'ailment'). I can record that too, if I'm not being clear :/

Haha, that's great! Thanks, Stu

Yeah, when I typed "grarsp" I had "grahsp" in mind, but it's pretty much how I imagined you pronounced it. If I say grasp with the same vowel as in "dance", would it be strange to you? According to the only study I had time to skim over, this is how most Bribaners (?) would pronounce it

(Well, if you could record the difference between ail and isle, I'd be interested to hear that). Wait! Ail and Ale sound the same, right?

Yeah, it would sound strange. For me, 'dance' almost rhymes with 'pants'. Like this:

Well, there goes my perceived notion of Stu being a bot.

Asshole.

Hey Lira, I was thinking you should probably give me the questions for Sjaelland Danish. I think my speaking pattern is closer to that than the Kentucky style (if I was a normal hick I'd have said 'yes' to all your questions).

Sure thing! This is going to be a challenge, but let's see what sort of questions I can come up with later at night.

By the way, is the accent consistent in the whole island or do people in Roskilde sound different from their more bourgeois counterparts in Copenhagen, for example?

Haha Danish is extremely varied all over the country; Someone from Copenhagen sounds completely different from someone who lives in KalundBorg two hours west. Also, funny you call the Copenhagen dialect bourgeois, when everyone in Denmark thinks they sound ghetto (or where I come from they did)
